This is part of the Media Matters article. It references the Kaine/Kilgore battle and how abortion rights (which kaine supports) became a key issue in the gubernatorial race.
"In fact, while Kaine has expressed opposition to abortion as a matter of personal faith, he made it clear during his campaign that he supports legal access to abortion and highlighted the issue as one distinguishing him and his Republican opponent, former Virginia attorney general Jerry W. Kilgore. ..."
"...The Democratic Party supports access to legal abortions; Kaine supports access to legal abortions. While Democrats may differ over the degree to which they think that abortion should be regulated, they belong to the party that supports abortion rights, while the GOP opposes them. "
You don't think I support reproductive rights...because you can't read. I have always been pro-choice. My issue is with late-term abortions. As for kaine's platform, I am hard-pressed to find the great divergence from the Democratic platform.
If you want though, I can quickly google Hillary Clinton's position on 3rd term abortions and her platform and can refute you, with evidence, as I did on the long-dead thread about 3rd term restrictions.
If you bothered to READ the Media Matters article at all, it breaks down the way in which the media falsely states Kaine's position on abortion. It also highlights how the GOP in VA unsuccessfully tried to drive Democrats from Kaine by stating that he was against legal abortions. He wasn't, he isn't. He did not run on an anti-abortion platform.
It's very interesting to see though how easily people who simply refuse to factcheck ANYTHING get manipulated. In your case AKA Smith, it's just intentional. You're like Archie Bunker, "Don't confuse me with the facts!"
I already knew that NARAL didn't endorse Kaine. What you need to additionally point out is that VA legislators created laws on parental notification and consent which Kaine supports. But these are state laws. In addition, Kaine has stated that he does and will support legal abortion and the laws of the land. His big break with NARAL is over 3rd term abortion bans unless the health, life of the mother is at risk.
The idea that kaine will actively work to overturn Roe v. Wade isn't true. He repeatedly states that these are his personal religious convictions. To make a contrast, Senator Bob Casey of PA (D) clearly states that he would work to overturn Roe V. Wade. there's a distinction here.
As a side but related note, kaine has a mixed view of the death penalty as well. He believes there should be a moratorium until it can be fairly applied.
Just don't watch. China lost me for good when a young chinese girl was recently murdered and her death was covered up as a suicide. Police were encouraged to falsify the investigation because the suspected perp was the son of an influential family. When the girl's uncle went to police to complain, they beat him to death. Unless the network airs programming about this and other instances of corruption and abuse, I won't watch.
I agree that the late-term abortion issue has been used (effectively) by the Right to turn the clock back on women's reproductive rights. The problem is that it is largely a minor issue since it effects very few. Only a couple nutjobs advocate a strict ban. Limits though have been the bone of contention. I think (although I can't know for sure) that Obama is trying to neutralize this as an avenue of attack.
Remember, that this has been a very effective tool for the GOP. By choosing Kaine, Obama can have it both ways. He can support Roe v Wade (which he does support, is there ANY doubt really) and at the same time have a patina of more conservative values. It's also important to remember that while very few americans actually agree with Kaine's perspective of abortion, most would support his stance on 3rd term limits, parental notification, etc..
Personally, I wish that children in this country could have their own rights as they do in some European countries, namely Sweden. They should have rights to challenge their parents and, of course, make decisions about their medical care, especially as it regards reproduction. However, I know from a practical standpoint that my views are not shared by a majority in the US. I don't want to fight a losing battle this election cycle. Dems need to get in office first and then set up policies that are better for our country than what the GOP has offered.
You beat me to it!
Yes, Obama is to Rove and his ilk just another uppity nigra. What a bunch of loser racists. Black men can never just be like every one else. Being strong and confident is "arrogant." So apparently is being smart and well-informed. OTOH, a fumbling, doddering richer-than-god old white dude is a man of the people. I want to vomit.
It's just a whiny, petulant and dishonest little spot that highlights how little respect the Bush administration garners around the world. How hard is it to show that all those wonderful tax cuts benefit the wealthiest americans? Not very and look at what 7 1/2 yrs of that has gotten us.
Obama is smart though to offer rebates. But how will we pay for it? The gas tax holiday OTOH is sheer nonsense and everyone knows the benefits will be "psychological" anyway. Thanks for that gem McCain.
This ad proves so clearly that McCain not in control of his campaign. His message and frankly, his brand are being undermined by whatever paid leech is calling the shots. I was watching MSNBC earlier and GOP shill Andrea (?) Tantaro was apoplectic. She couldn't wrap her head around it.
I'm almost afraid to make the analogy, but it reminds me a little of the flailing, schizoid messages that Mark penn squeezed out for the Clinton campaign. I can only hope that this individual is here to stay for the McCain campaign. What a loser.
