"Even GAO says the 70% number is misleading, verging on bogus. Nearly all of the corporations that didn't pay any taxes are subchapter S corps - the very mom and pops that Obama says he's going to cut taxes for. The reason they didn't pay any taxes is because Bush has crushed the economy, and they aren't making any money. We aren't going to get the money we need from there.

Wow, are you a liar (or can't read). That's not what the report states. It is specifically the tax loopholes that allow for these corps to file under the individual codes despite raking in TRILLIONS of dollars. Here's a link:

"Two-thirds of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes between 1998 and 2005, according to a new report from Congress. The study by the Government Accountability Office, expected to be released Tuesday, said about 68 percent of foreign companies doing business in the U.S. avoided corporate taxes over the same period.
Collectively, the companies reported trillions of dollars in sales, according to GAO's estimate.
"It's shameful that so many corporations make big profits and pay nothing to support our country," said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who asked for the GAO study with Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.
An outside tax expert, Chris Edwards of the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington, said increasing numbers of limited liability corporations and so-called "S" corporations pay taxes under individual tax codes.
"Half of all business income in the United States now ends up going through the individual tax code," Edwards said."
You either didn't hear the speech or you're justmaking stuff up. There were plenty of clear, specific plans for how Obama intended to grow jobs and control the deficit. It mainly involves closing tax loopholes on corporations. Perhaps you missed it but a recent report showed that something like 70% of American corporations pay NO FEDERAL income tax. In addition, Obama stated that he wanted to reward only those companies that do not ship jobs overseas, providing additional funds for government initiatives from corporate downsizers. Lastly, he proposed (of course) withdrawing from the war in Iraq and making their government cover the costs of reconstruction from their oil surpluses. I'm sure there's more but that's the gist that I got from his performance.
My advice to you then, mattwa, is to go back and read the text of the speech. It might help you remember what was said. Obama provided a very clear contrast with McCain and I look forward to reading through McCain's acceptance speech next week to see if he has any concrete plans to restart our stalled economy or of he will simply flog the POW line- his old fallback excuse.
Obama did exactly what he needed to do and that was go on the attack against McCain while explaning his solutions for our challenges. The best part was that he did so without being personally disparaging. I felt that was a huge contrast to McCain and the GOP's recent spate of attacks and demonstrated that Obama is going to define his campaign over the next several weeks by clear solutions. If this performance is any indication, Obama is going to clean McCain's clock during the debates.
The big problem for McCain is that he needs to keep arms length from both Bush and Cheney. Just the appearance of these two clowns at the RNC could spell a week of bad press for the GOP and its nominee. Gustav might provide a convenient excuse for the GOP. However, they won't get the cover they are hoping for from it. When Gustav hits, somewhere around the time Hurrican Katrina hit, the entire nation will be mentally revisiting those horrible scenes that enraged so many of us and demonstrated the failure of the Bush White House to plan for and meet the basic needs of its people.
Your posts regarding the Democratic party and its nominee have, for several months now, added up to little more than a complaint list. You didn't like how the primaries turned out. WE GET IT.
Now, do you care about electing a person that will forward Hillary Clinton's agenda? If you do, you will vote Obama. If you don't care about Hillary's platform, then what are you posting for?
So, what's your point? Black people aren't allowed to vote for anyone else other than the Clintons? What garbage.
Most black people voted for Bill Clinton back in the '90's. That's a big reason why he enjoyed two terms in office in case you've forgotten how elections work in this country. When he was fighting for his political survival amid the Lewinsky scandal, black people stood by him. I'd say black people don't owe the Clintons anything else.
I am not going to read through all of the posts to figure out why Smith is giving us chapter and verse on her BIO. Perhaps I'm wrong and it makes some kind of sense. However, I find it inappropriate, distracting and it smacks of trolldom. This thread is about Bill's performance last night, not you.
Bill Clinton was magnificent. Standing up there he was the old Bill we all knew and loved. I'm very proud that he and his wife delivered for Obama. I didn't think they'd come through but they did in a generous and inspirational way. Bravo to Bill and Hillary!
Essentially these are a bunch of high, tough-talkers. They look like freaks and the fact that they were armed is scary. However, they apparently had no real plan to actually shoot Obama, they were just babbling. As an aside though, when guns and drugs are both found and charged together, the penalties are usually pretty severe.
Are you a bigot or just stupid? I don't know. What I do know is that Michelle Obama does not have a "wig" nor a weave. It's her hair. Don't be so ignorant or don't post.
