regarding the International Crimminal Court allows for prosecution of war crimes committed from 2002 onward. The seven countries that voted against the treaty were Iraq, Israel, Libya, the People's Republic of China, Qatar, the United States, and Yemen. Lovely company we are in.
One of Obama's first priorities should be to make the U.S. a signatory to this treaty.
A commission to study the relevant evidence and pass it on to the ICC would be in order.
Didn't Rumsfeld narrowly escape detention in Paris last year? Even Kissinger has not been held accountable for his being an accessory to war crimes - wars of aggression, genocide (Indonesia), torture (Chile), etc.
Would that the civilized world would at least shun all these war crimminals instead of giving them honoraria on the lecture circuits.
from all the mealy mouthed responses to Rush & Co. that we hear from the 'liberal' media. That this so-called comedian/party leader Limbaugh can get away with his outrageous lies and right wing hate mongering unscathed is shameful and Wanda Sykes is putting things right. I was living in NYC on 9/11 and lost friends there and I find the right's co-opting it for their own agenda much more offensive than what Sykes said. She's my hero!
"shift attention away from the political aspects of the decision"
by paying attention to the man's qualifications, and the above is a major plus. Like Kevin Rudd of Australia, here is someone who can speak with the Chinese, not just some yahoo political appointee with nothing but his money and/or connections to back him up. This is like Kennedy's appointment of Reischauer to Japan (the man could write poetry with the emperor).
Being represented in the world by culturally literate people is refreshing!
where they used to be tailgaters, riding your back bumper for miles and miles (or kilometers and kilometers), but they've pretty much stopped doing that and now they just drive on whichever side of the road they feel like. Coming around the bend on mountain roads will often find you face to face with an Italian driver in your lane. We yell, "Go home, Brit!" at them. ;)
