Same Old Same Old
[Read the article: The GOP's Iran option is off the table]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Republicans would rather run on fear-mongering than actual issues because they lack the moral high-ground. They've been caught in so many lies, so many mis-statements, so much nuancing and so much dissembling, they most likely don't even remember the truth.
As the old Chinese adage so perfectly states: "The fish rots from the head first." George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, as heads of the Republican Party, are most certainly rotten and permeate the party with their foul and fetid fishiness.
I imagine we can expect more, not less, of "SwiftBoating", innuendo, third-party attacks and "false-message ads" over the next year; I'd be completely surprised if any of those egregious cretins in the GOP suddenly developed a spine, a heart, a soul or a conscience.

"Compassionate Conservatism, Redux"
[Read the article: Mike Huckabee's gay and lesbian thing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If I hear one more "hate the sin; love the sinner" piece of drivel spewed from the putrid lips of yet another BornAgain bigot, I'm going to immediately throttle him/her with my bare hands! (I think I can find some Old Testament scripture to back me up there, too!)
No, this is more of the faux "kinder, gentler" Christian Conservatism that those folks who are the cold-heart and empty-soul of the Republican party love to trumpet; what they won't trumpet, however, is that the old and vicious anti-gay feelings have simply been re-wrapped and re-packaged in softer cloth.
The time for action has come; the time for inaction has ended. Faced with the potential election of yet another of these unctious bigots, direct action may be justified.
I, for one, am not content to sit idly by while my country veers farther to the right into abject intolerence, ignorance and inequality. I don't believe that I'm alone, either.

McFly, Redux
[Read the article: McCain's last stand?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Poor John Mccain. He used to make sense, make a case for the Republicans and make a difference; now, he makes a pitiful figure. He looks more like the old neighborhood codger who comes out on his front porch to yell "hey, you kids, keep off my lawn!". How very sad.
In the old "Back To The Future" motion pictures, Marty McFly's hapless dad was reduced to a cartoonish buffoon, smiling and shuffling along and generally uttering babble and nonsense. John McCain is the McFly of this campaign: bumbling, fumbling and, increasingly, irrelevant.
John's downfall began in 2000 when he allowed George W. Bush to paint him as having a black child...among other things...in the South Carolina primary. He also...correctly...accused the late Rev. Fallwell of being an "agent of intolerence". That was then.
Fast-forward to the 2004 election and there's John McCain... pitifully endorsing Bush...the very man who slimed him four years earlier. This year, he made nice with the "agents of intolerence" to win their ReligiousRight votes. He also claimed to be a member of the Southern Baptist Convention... even though he is actually a life-long member of the Episcopal Church.
John McCain has become a caricature of a sleazy politician who will say anything and do anything for a vote; it is no wonder, then, that the electorate has found him out.
Put a fork in 'im; he's done...

Hillary Haters: Doing The Repubs Dirty-Work
[Read the article: Hillary Clinton gets serious]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Hillary Clinton is, in my opinion, the Republican party's biggest "nightmare candidate": she is strong, intelligent, focused, competent, has a great sense of humor and is well-suited to actually BE the President of the United States from day one.
Republicans like their women (when they actually LIKE women) to be subservient, stay-at-home, barefoot, pregnant and fawning sycophants. Hillary's strength and independence scare the hell out of them because they think she may cause their women to have their eyes opened.
When I hear them say that "Hillary can't be elected" or "the Republicans really want Hillary to be the candidate because she'll be easy to beat", what I'm actually hearing is that she CAN be elected and that they fear her candidacy. They should be worried; she can, and will, beat them.
Supporters of Barack Obama or John Edwards who think the best ways to elevate their candidates are to devastate Hillary are sadly mistaken; they're only helping the Republicans.
I have issues with Obama and Edwards; I find Obama to be too inexperienced and Edwards to be too "mushy". (Recall how Dick Cheney sliced and diced Edwards in their lone debate in 2004? I haven't forgotten that one!)
I'm a white, thirty-something, moderate-on-social-issues, conservative-on-financial-issues male...who is supporting Hillary Clinton for the Presidency. Now, either Barack Obama or John Edwards would make a good VP for Hillary's Presidency. (Given a choice, I prefer Barack because I think having the first woman and the first African-American as President and Vice-President, respectively, will be not only historic, but, will be a winning ticket, as well.)
To the Hillary haters, two things: she will be a formidable candidate and an awesome President.

Yeah, Well...
[Read the article: Barack Obama's breakthrough victory]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Much as I like Barack Obama, I don't have the much-needed confidence that he is "the guy" who will be pushing the broom cleaning up after the elephant-parade that is the Bush Maladministration. He needs more gravitas.
The next President needs to be more than a naif when it comes to foreign policy; Barack is woefully deficient in that area.
I would support Barack for Vice-President to a President Hillary Clinton for eight years. Then, in 2016, he will have had the requisite hands-on experience.
As an analogy: I love my 16 year old son, however, as a newer driver, I still don't trust him with my Audi. Give him a few years experience as a driver and I will.
Sorry, Hillary-haters...she's still the best choice in '08.
