Hans Blix, PBS News Hour, 3/17/2004:

"[Cheney] made a speech in August of 2002 in which he said that the inspection is useless at best. And I think that was pretty disdainful. It was clear also when I met him that he said that we will not hesitate to discredit inspections in favor of disarmament. I think they had a very deep root... some of the people in the U.S. administration, had a very deep rooted skepticism or even disdain for inspections – not all."

  • Newsweek coverage

[Read the article: Huckabee and criminals: It's worse than just Wayne DuMond]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I read Newsweek's covery story about Huckabee and paid particular attention to their treatment of the DuMond case. Compared to your clear, detailed report, Newsweek just glossed over the case, repeating the surface details they could have learned simply from watching cable news. Good work.

  • Republican History

[Read the article: This Modern World]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In September 2002, George Bush urged Congress to pass the Iraq resolution: "I am sending suggested language for a resolution. I want -- I've asked for Congress' support to enable the administration to keep the peace."

The bill was sold as a way to give the US negotiating power so we could avoid going to war. Democrats have from the beginning been portrayed as "voting for the war." They did not. I recommend reading Kerry's speech on the Senate floor before the vote -- he was voting to give the US diplomatic leverage, and he sternly warned that Bush might misuse the resolution. This distortion of the vote as a vote in favor of the Iraq war is simply a Republican spin on the actual events, and we should not let it stand.

I'm a big fan, TT, (and not a big fan of HRC), but I think we need to avoid feeding the Republican Hillary narrative.

  • Question

[Read the article: Hillary and the mean kids on the bus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Kornblut noted that the press corps sat 'in silence' until Hillary left."

Kornblut can't be trusted. Do we have any confirmation that what she says is true? She may just be engaging in some kind of Hillary meta-bashing.

  • I blame the media, too...

[Read the article: Edwards bows out, but stays on message on the way]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I believe the reason that "Edwards may have had trouble connecting with the voters over the past months" is that the media refused to cover his campaign. On the PBS News Hour last night, for example, in the forum segment they talked about every candidtate (Rudy, Huckabee, Thompson), but did not even mention Edwards in passing. He was not viable because the media hid him from sight.

In the end, I can accept Obama or (begrudgingly) Clinton as president, but Edwards was the only hope for real change.

  • Another Ranking

[Read the article: National Journal's ideological ranking of Obama rears its ugly head]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

By my calculations, McCain is #1 in the number-of-innocent-people-who-will-die-if-this-senator-is-president ranking. Lieberman is #2.

  • Question

[Read the article: John King with Mike McConnell: Rare journalistic honesty]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Glenn, in an earlier post, you stated that the telecom companies are required by law to comply with legal requests from the government. This question seems to be at the heart of the debate. Can you cite the text of the law that requires telecom compliance?

  • I've changed my mind...

[Read the article: Clinton camp uses "monster" comment for fundraising appeal]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Last week I had great admiration for both Clinton and Obama. Not anymore -- Hillary's public endorsement of McCain over Obama convinced me she IS a monster. Her getting the nomination is apparently more important to her than the thousands of lives lost -- e.g., from lack of health insurance or bombs -- if McCain is elected.

  • Reasons to Defend the Constitution

    [Read the article: Various items]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In all the letters I've written Reid, Pelosi, and my state senators and congresspersons about telecom immunity, I've asked that they defend the Constitution. Perhaps this argument is too high-falutin -- I should have offered the more self-serving argument that voting against immunity could help get them re-elected.

  • But...

[Read the article: Misadventures in logical reasoning -- and lessons learned from the Spitzer scandal]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Spitzer did much more than just hire a hooker, he was actually linked to a prostitution ring! At least that's what I've been hearing over and over on the news.

  • Much of McCain's credibility...

[Read the article: Journalists, McCain and the false Iran/al-Qaida link]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

seems to come from the fact that he was captured and tortured in Vietnam. This seems to me to be equivalent to being hailed as an expert on architecture because you fell down the stairs.

  • Is Obama a Muslim? Clinton: "Of course not"

[Read the article: Hillary's team crosses the line]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I agree with many commenters that Clinton's campaign has been much more nasty than Obama's, and that she by far deserves blame for the current state of the campaign.

However, don't be duped by the media reporting about Hillary's response on 60 Minutes when asked if Obama was a Muslim. Her first answer was a clear and unambiguous No, and then she was hounded for anther answer.

  • IOIYAR

[Read the article: Why did Clinton wait to release her tax return?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Bill Clinton could tell voters he felt their pain. That particular line suddenly got a whole lot less believable."

As many have noted, that's a bunch of baloney, straight from Republican baloney factory: Being rich is a fault if you're a Democrat, but an asset if you're Republican.

How could you write such non-thinking drivel?

"Hillary Clinton can't possibly have any connection to the Regular Folk because her husband, who grew up dirt poor, became quite wealthy after being President..."

Funny thing -- this "skewed" and "vapid" narrative is the main point of Alex Koppelman's latest Salon piece:

Calling Juan Cole a "fierce critic of the world" made me laugh -- it should be "fierce critic of the war."

    Great post as usual.

  • Exit polls

[Read the article: Obama can't close the deal ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The CBS exit polls say that 30% of those who voted for Hillary will vote for McCain even if she wins the nomination! Seems to me that winning a primary would have more meaning if the people who voted for you actually wanted you to be president.
