I feel like I've seen the "guys are bad in bed because they think sex is like porn" article a million times. How about coming up with a fresh angle on it? Writing about how porn makes women bad in bed could have been interesting, that's not one I've really seen.
Also, your definition of porn seems awfully narrow and cliche. Have you ever searched the interwebs for more realistic porn? Mainstream porn is just one of many options. There is porn where you can actually see women orgasm--this may not be a bad way for some guys to see what gets a woman going. Perhaps you could have taken that angle.
Instead, we get a tired article about how guys suck in bed cos of porn. Blah.
And @regularjoe1365, you're absolutely right about Trouble Every Day and the harrowing score by Tindersticks. Listening to the soundtrack without the movie is tense enough. Tindersticks did the soundtrack to another excellent Claire Denis film as well, Nenette et Boni.
Many of them are most concerned with getting convictions and keeping their jobs.
Though I'll never know for sure, cos I ain't gonna see it. I can't stand his pseudo-philosophic psychobabble. I have never understood the appeal of his movies--they're not provocative, they're just dumb.
"[S]omething close to a tragic meditation on mortality" is exactly right.
It's a movie about the relationship between a married couple from childhood to the wife's death, and then we see how to widower deals with her death. He's depressed and beset by problems, particularly construction around his house. He goes on a journey with a young boy and a house held aloft by balloons. A great movie, but most definitely for adults. I don't have a kid, so I can't vouch for how much kids get out of it or how much they like it. I loved it.
Which was that Polanski is still breaking the law. He has proven not that he's rehabilitated but that he's afraid of facing the consequences.
Which means he's still breaking the law. So apparently he's not fully rehabilitated. Besides, don't you think there are plenty of people in jail who have been rehabilitated who will never see the outside world? The only reasons this is different are his money and fame.
Andrew, I usually agree with you and find your columns interesting. But not knowing if he should be extradited and brought to justice? Wake up, buddy. He's not just a "pervy old man." He committed and admitted to committing a crime. Therefore, he must do the time. I'm not looking to gouge his eyes out.
Imagine that this wasn't Polanski, but another man who drugged and raped a 13 year old and then fled the country. Would he have gone free until he was in his 70s? Yeah, probably not, eh? Very disappointing, Andrew. You're as bad as the apologists signing petitions.
Lizard Balls is just a bit over the top, but Zacharek really is garbage. I enjoy the comments way more than the reviews. O'Hehir should write every review on Salon.
What's up with Texas?
I've never thought of CD as much of an iconoclast--who has? Sounds like the show needed a celeb and a celeb needed the show. That's showbiz!
You complain that Cameron Diaz said nothing, but that's pretty much what every movie star does. Most of them (like most people) probably aren't terribly exciting in the first place. They have to sit for a million different interviews to sell their latest projects and say the same shit over and over--what do you want them to say?
How often is there a coherent point to the articles? And, when there is a coherent argument, how often is it interesting?
I think there are many unanswered questions about the events of 9/11. My comment about "truthers" was directed at the outlandish conspiracy theorists and those who claim that it was all our fault that we were attacked. Sorry.
Suck it.
Why do I even bother reading Broadsheet?
I'm 34 and I have zero interest in the literary career of Stephen Elliott. I guess I'm way out of touch. Get over yourself, coolidge.
Um, what?
Um, what?
And call it "That Crazy Cunt Addicted to 'Skunk Fame' (Who I Won't Mention by Name) Ruined My Life and Couldn't Even Look in the Mirror and Realize That She's a Crazy Cunt."
If a hell exists, I believe there is a special place for Julia Myerson amongst all the other abusive parents. The difference between her and other emotionally abusive parents is that she flaunts it in front of the world.
It sounds like the comment quoted in War Room was meant ironically, especially considering the tux and top hat. A classic parody of the rich totally misunderstanding/misrepresenting the nature of Social Security and Medicare.
Um, and so have billions of people who were guilty. Claiming innocence isn't quite the same thing as being innocent. Is he guilty? That was up to the Scottish justice system to decide, and he was found guilty. If an error was made, that's what the appeals process is for. The arguments that he didn't do it or that he was a fall guy miss the point in this case. al-Megrahi wasn't released because he was innocent; he was released for "compassionate reasons."
As for the UK exerting pressure over Scotland, Gordon Brown met with Gadaffi twice and discussed al-Megrahi "in passing". And the British government sent the Scots a letter saying that they hoped the request for release would be considered--a diplomatic way of saying that they wanted him released. I don't know if you've followed the coverage in the UK press, but I got this info from The Guardian. If you believe the British gov't had nothing to do with his release, I can give you a great deal on a really nice bridge.
