Back to Advocatus

who asked: 'As for Paul in KY, what on Earth does the Byzantine Empire have to do with the price of Hummus in Constantinople? Are you saying that I'm defending the treatment of slaves in the United States from 1776-1865? I am certainly not. Slavery was an unmitigated horror, and the elimination of it, while it wasn't the sole cause of the war, was certainly its most beneficial outcome. I have said so before, you and certain other posters have chosen to ignore my point.'

The point about slavery in Byzantium (1500 years ago) was that it was much better to have been a slave under Justinian than to have been a slave in the old South. The slaves in Byzantium had many more rights under the law than the poor devils down in Dixie.

That historical truth was to rebut your silly claim that Northern laborers had it about as bad as the slaves.

Glad you're not voting for McLame. Please work to ensure your relatives/friends also don't vote for him.

bootlegger

you have a very smart little boy.

What you said could be made into a very effective ad by the Obama people.

I'm not holding my breath, though.

Art Guerilla

Justice Holmes said: 'The right of your fist to swing ends at my nose'.

I haven't seen your 'censored' comments, but if they were hate speech or the equivilent of falsely yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater, then I'm OK with them being deleted.

Personally, I think you use TOO MANY caps when writing your diatribes.

Probably Already Said

by another poster (haven't read comments yet) but this is a classic Repub tactic of getting an issue on the ballot in a swing state that will motivate their whackjob base to get out & vote.

The proposed law itself is crazy, IMO. You need a crazy law to get the crazies to vote for it (so says Darth Fat Boy).

Question, Glenn

Why do you think Congress (specifically the Democrats) have been so cowed these last 20 months?

Are they afraid that in some constitutional showdown that the Supreme Court will side with Bush & thus give the final veneer of legality to all this abrogating/changing the normal system of checks & balances that we thought we had known for the past 80 or more years?

Interested in your opinion.

Thank's Glenn

for your candid response. I excerpted a line in your response:

'I don't think they fear losing a court case. Especially after the victory they had a few month ago from a very right-wing judge in the U.S. Attorneys' case -- who rejected the administration's blunderbuss assertion of Executive Privilege'

Regarding the Supreme Court, maybe they fear that it doesn't matter about all the precedents, court cases, etc. This Supreme Court could just make shit up.

Anyway, I fear your explanation is all too true. Jesus, if you had told me about all this stuff 15 or so years ago, I would have laughed my ass off & said you'd been smoking bad crack.

You have just won the 'McCain Trophy', given to the person who gets the most lies into a 3 paragraph screed.

Bravo.

You're a Better Man/Woman Than I, Saddle Tramp

who posted: 'John McCain is a liar!!! I recently posted this phrase - in great, big, bold letters - in the back windshield of my pickup on a big piece of butcher paper. I live in Utah so you may well imagine that I am a total hit with the all my right-wing, mormon neighbors.'

God bless you. I live in Kentucky & have a nice Obama sticker on my car. I honestly don't think I'd have the guts to do what you're doing in Utah.

Give em Hell, Saddle Tramp!!

Hey Lynx

Thank's for swatting down sduncan000. I'm trying to get some work done today, so I didn't have the time to whomp him point by point.

Excellent rebuttal.

Rance & paulpsd7

Thank's for doing the yeoman's work of swatting down the deluded idiots that have infested this thread.

I especially got a kick out of 'Benny', who (and this is funny either way) either really thinks that Pres. Carter was pro-Khomeni (you know, the dude who pretty much sunk his presidency) or he was trying to 'edulie' us into believing that load of BS.

Salon will save his wacko posts for future generations to marvel at.

Funny Line, THawk7

who opined: 'When given a conservative choice, at this moment in history, Americans will choose conservative'

Yup, once the bank has forclosed on their home & they can't get govt help (since that wouldn't be 'conservative' to help out shiftless, lazy bums who can't keep up with their house payments), those Americans will flock to the polls to vote for McCain.

"Why I've seen so much good in the way the conservatives have governed for the last 8 years, I think they should be in power forever", says THawk7 from his cardboard box.

Just keep on believing that. I'm sure there's a pony in there somewhere.

Good Point, Stevio

McLame was saved by the NVA from an angry mob of villagers who were in process of beating him to death.

I'm sure he did get some 'enhanced interrogation' when he was a prisoner, but you know, you crash 5 or 6 planes & sooner or later you're going to have some injuries.
