Last Response to JPScott

1st Mr. Scott quote: 'A couple of things I forgot. In your first reply you mention that Rupp reportedly met in secret with John McLendon. This was mentioned in Kaufman's article and apparently is mentioned in the film.'

I have no idea whether that is true or not. IF it is true (that he would only meet with him in secret), it does speak to his view on educated black coaches being his peers or not. If it is not true, then it is a slander on Coach Rupp.

2nd Mr. Scott quote: 'Also, in another area talk about Rupp signing Tom Payne only due to pressure from UK President John Oswald. Oswald actually left the school in 1968, prior to Payne's recruitment.'

My mistake, please substitute 'Dr. Kirwan' for 'Dr. Oswald' in my prior post. Other than that I stand on my comment.

3rd Mr. Scoot quote: 'If your point was that Rupp should have recruited black players before 1964, then that's something that Rupp likely would have agreed with.'

That is not a point of mine.

(snip interesting summary of Coach Rupp & Dr. Dickey clashing about recruiting blacks, don't know if it is true or not, but it sounds good)

4th Mr. Scott quote: 'So the fact of the matter was that Rupp was not ALLOWED to recruit black players prior to May 1963. (and it is noteworthy that Rupp in the 1950's and early 1960's did specifically talk to black players and say he wished he could recruit them. Some he helped gain scholarships to other schools.)'

Gee, I wouldn't have wanted a black person on an SEC team prior to 1963 (I would have feared for their life). To me, any black player that Coach Rupp would have coveted, must have been pretty good. Glad he helped Elgin Baylor get a scholarship to Seattle, who knows if anyone would picked him up (just joking, hee hee).

(snip overview of ugly Jim Crow laws which were in effect in Kentucky & other Southern states)

Yes, I'm aware of the Day Law. I wonder what Coach Rupp thought of it.

One Missile?

Unless it had a nuclear tip, I don't think one missile would matter very much against a building the size of the World Trade center.

Now, one 767 going about 500 knots & loaded down with JP4 I can wrap my head around (it being the primary cause of the building's collapse).

Talking About UL 1980 Champs

They were certainly a great team, but I remember them taking a 17 point ass whipping in Freedom Hall from Iona (with Jeff Ruland).

UK's 78 champions barely beat Florida State in 1st round. We were down by 8 at half (with no shot clock or 3 pointers). Coach Hall made probably his greatest in-game move by benching 3 starters at half.

By the way WES, thank's for your comments in the Black Magic thread.

The Sad Truth

It is all propaganda now. Time has no credibility. They don't care, they will do what they think they have to to get McCain elected.

Their 'reporters' know if they don't give em what they want, they'll get another reporter to cash the check.

Re Coach Gillespie

I agree WES, he has really lit a fire under their butts. I'm looking forward to great things.

Good Luck to Louisville!

Preempting the Death Sentence

Maybe it is the culture or poor diet or religion or whatever but I wish those women would think 'the bastard has to sleep sometime' & then while they're sleeping, out comes the machete. You get a neighbor in the same boat to vouch for your alibi.

They are giving you a death warrant when they rape you. Maybe put antifreeze in their drink. I doubt they CSI much in the SA slums.

One rapist, one bullet.

Good Point, Bill on Biting

Bill Owen said: 'A lot of people here today are talking about their cats "biting" them. I just want to point out, that if a cat was serious, the bite will be deep, it will draw blood and is a serious wound. A cat can easily sink their fangs all the way into your flesh and will if they are really mad or scared.'

Years ago, a beautiful kitten I owned (name: Yombo, age approx 4 months old at time of story) was hankering for some food. I was fixing a potted meat sandwich & I put a dollop on one of my fingers & thought she'd lick it off.

I guess she didn't understand my finger was under there or forgot, but she bit down on the end of my finger like she was intending to eat it (I assume).

Well let me tell you that I thought she had bitten the end of my finger off at first. I went howling around the house holding my poor finger & I was afraid to look at it. It turned out she just put about 4 neat holes in it (didn't even have to get it looked at, etc.) It felt, though, like some giant vice had crushed the end of my finger.

Not only is it the sharpness of the teeth, but the great force they can exert with their short muzzle & large cheek muscles.

Need to Visit England

debaser mentioned this: 'Think Maradona's "hand of god" would be so legendary if it was overturned by replay? It might not be fair - but it adds to the history of the sport.'

Hope you get a chance to expound on this in a pub in Newcastle or Liverpool sometime on a Friday night, oh around 1045 local time.

Bet you'll get into a vibrant discussion. Tell them you're a Yank, too (that'll help move the discussion along).
