Mr. Scott quote: 'I don't understand you bringing up Alumni Gym, since Memorial Coliseum was built in the early 1950's and from what I understand, Memorial is where they generally practiced.'

I can see you have taken pains to be more precise with your words. I note the use of the word 'generally' in your above statement. While I was told the team ran their normal basketball practices in Memorial Coliseum (where they played), much of the non-basketball conditioning drills were held at Alumni Gym (where team played back in days of Ralph Beard, etc. & right beside student center). I think you know this, which is why you caveated with 'generally'.

Another Mr. Scott quote: 'As far as Wes Unseld, your claim about Rupp not worrying about bringing black players into the deep south is simply incorrect. Rupp was very concerned about that and made mention of this in at least half a dozen magazine and newspaper articles during this time.'

My sources, on campus, said that Coach Rupp intimated in private that they would get harrasment & he was concerned about its effect on the team as a whole more than any one individual (the black dude) and that had a chilling effect on Mr. Unseld's desire to attend UK (which may never have been that high to begin with). You might say Mr. Unseld & family got impression Coach Rupp would rather not put up with the trouble that would ensue,

My jist on subject is Coach Rupp didn't seem to try too hard to recruit blacks for several years. You have your take on that and I have mine.

Another JPScott quote: 'As far as Tom Payne. The fact that you called him Parker (who was one of Payne's teammates) leads me to question your knowledge of this subject. Regardless, I don't know if Payne was recruited by Louisville but he was recruited by UCLA among others and was a prep All-American. Signs of problems with him didn't really appear until later when his father (and authority figure) died prematurely.'

My bad, I brainfarted on his name, typing before factchecking there. The fact that you say 'you don't know if he was' leads me to believe that you do know. Mr. Payne had already in HS developed a reputation in Louisville & I think that reputation was communicated to Coach Rupp & his assistants & they went ahead anyway (being seduced, IMO, by his great basketball talent). I might have went too far in saying that Coach Rupp deliberately recruited him because he thought he would fail spectacularily, but to me (and others) it looks sorta suspicious. Being charitable, I would say that Coach Rupp probably thought he would have his thumb on him & that he could control him.

Surprising

that a continental sophisticate such as maureenodonnell, who deigns to enlighten us colonists from time to time, and has this quote from an above post: 'Most of us believe that those who were beheaded were aristocrats but now it's being discovered that farmers, peasants and the urban poor also incurred the vengeance of the revolutionaries, between l792 and l795.'

would not have heard of the 'Vendee' in whatever public school she attended. Yes, the Evrenmondes weren't the only ones killed during the revolution. Glad you have educated yourself, wish you'd stick to continental subjects. Ciao.

Mr Scott quote: 'Regarding your comment about Tom Payne withstanding community pressure and signing with UK. I didn't pull this out of my ass, like some of you are doing. I based this on an extensive interview Payne himself gave.'

I don't think I ever said he didn't have pressure not to attend UK. Please reread my post #2 & I think you will see I acknowledged that right before I said there were people who wanted him to attend UK, because they knew what a wacko he was & hoped he would hurt UK.

Another JPScott quote: 'And frankly, Wes Unseld and Butch Beard and Perry Wallace have all mentioned through the years that there was pressure put upon them specifically NOT to sign with UK. I don't know why you have a hard time grasping that.'

IMO, I don't have any trouble grasping that.

Again with the JPScott quote: 'I'm not sure what your point of the differential between 1964 (when UK first recruited Unseld) and 1969 (the year UK signed Payne along with 5th team Parade All-American Darryl Bishop). But as I said, UK did recruit black players every year in between.'

It was sorta childish comeback that you said 'many years' in one of your posts & it was about 7 & to me that is not 'many years'. I probably shouldn't have used that, I'm usually better than that & you gave ample opportunity to skewer you on other things anyway.

Here's another one: 'In hindsight they should have tried harder. Maybe in hindsight they should have tried the 'token' route (similar to what UNC, Duke and others tried) where they brought in a walk-on to integrate their squad without giving him a scholarship. [Rupp, for better or worse, was against the idea of tokenism, and frankly I think he's right.'

See, we can both agree that he should have tied harder :-). I think, if had really wanted to, he could have got a 6th or 7th or 8th man type (not a walk on, better than that), who wanted to make a difference & be a trailblazer. Some of Coach Hall's first black recruits would fit the bill there. I don't think he really wanted blacks (maybe subconciously) & he ensured he didn't get any until he was dragged kicking & screaming (IMO).
