Knight Resigning (and that Suns Trade)

I was off yesterday (picking up debris from my property) & I didn't get a chance to weigh in on Knight slinking off into the twilight (I hope). My take (which I didn't really see in yesterday's comments) was that Knight resigned to give his son a chance at winning in TTech, before Knight had inevitably worn out his welcome.

Pat Knight has no resume other than being Bob Knight's son & factotum for a number of years. Knight's teams were beginning to look like his last IU teams (not responding to his brand of encouragment, wanting to end season to get away from him, etc.).

If Knight had stayed to end of season & TTech again gets run out of NCAA tourney on 1st weekend (or doesn't make NCAAs), then the University management might have started thinking that it might be time for a change & Bob Knight's son wasn't going to be the knid of change they would be looking for.

Knight can be cunning & probably caught a few whiffs of that concern & figured out that he better let Pat become the head guy now, or there might not be a 'now'.

As for the trade, I can only assume that Marion was really moping around & undercutting the coach. Shaq didn't like running up & down floor when he was at LSU, let alone now. He can still be a rebounding & defensive presence (best against a team that likes to walk the ball up the court). Probably have to look back in hindsight to see if this was a mistake or not. I do know that if they play the Lakers in the playoffs, Shaq will be fired up for that one.

All In or All Out

There's a nice article in this month's 'Smithsonian' magazine by Steve Martin, where he gives a nice synopsis of his early career & how long it took him to get to his late 70s - early 80s heights.

It was evident that he had given long & serious thought to the type of comedy he wanted to do (he started his career at age 15), how he would be different from his peers, his decisions on what his stage persona would be & why he decided upon that method, etc.

He gives succinct analysis of some other comedians popular back in the 60s & 70s & what he felt they were doing right or wrong & how their approach wouldn't necessarily work for him.

He spent years being only moderately successful before his big breaks came. It would be worth a read, IMO.

Well Said

I like what ololon said a few pages back. When your pet gets old or sick, it is best to let them go peacefully & with a minimum of pain.

There are millions of other poor dogs & cats begging for a good home. Give one of them the gift of a loving home. I think your old pet would approve.

Is He Going to Sell Drugs?

an anonyni up above was relating a story about a couple where the wife is a high paid lawyer & the husband is a construction worker: 'His father, however, is already giving him a hard time for "allowing" his wife to make more money than him. My friend is afraid that his father would never accept him sitting at home and "free-loading" off of his wife.'

The father (IMO) must be either just using that as a handy way to needle his son, or has no idea how much more money the wife makes, or is a dipshit.

Unless you start owning the construction company, there's no way you can make more than a high paid lawyer.

Women Can Fight Too

Brightstar65 mentioned this in one of his many posts: 'Let women do as they please. Let men do as they please. IF someone wants to attack us, the women can pick up the weapons too.'

When I was a junior officer back in early 80s, we were quite concerned with a Soviet attack in Germany, thru the Fulda Gap.

I was reading a briefing paper that focused on our numerical inferiority vs. Warsaw pact troops & they had interviewed our top Army general for that area & one of the questions they asked was what he expected of our female support troops in the event of a WWIII style armored assault. He said: 'I expect our women to pick up a rifle and start killing commies'.

I think our women would have performed admirably, had such a terrible thing come to pass.

Her TV Brother

I tried to watch an episode of Hanna Montana recently (hard to comment intelligently on a show you've never seen) & I got thru about 10 minutes before I just couldn't take it anymore.

The dialogue made 'Saved by the Bell' seem like 'Seinfeld'. The laugh track was only missing a snare drum to give it that last bit of vaudville kitsch.

How about the person who I think plays her brother in the show (looks sorta like a hobbit). How old is he? He looks like he is 25 or so.

Good bless this young Kentuckian for making a giant pile of money (I have met her grandfather many years ago, nice man), but her show is pretty lame (IMO).

I haven't really heard her sing, so she might have a real singing talent.
