The Leaver Ethos

I think the results of the study as relayed by Mr. Burton is a relic of what I call the 'Leaver Times'. If you've read the book 'Ishmael', you will get the reference.

In the book, the people who lived in indigenous cultures & didn't attept to monopolize resources/territory are called the 'Leavers'. Modern culture/nation states are part of the 'Taker' culture.

One of the aspects of Leaver society is that every group has their own territory & they stay in that territory & modulate their birthrates so that they can maintain a non-overpopulated society within their territory. Another aspect is that there is going to be conflict when someone from outside the group comes in to their territory (you stay where you are & I'll stay where I am).

To me, in that kind of society, you want to quickly identify a person from outside your territory (stealing your resources) & get them out of your territory pronto. This part of our brain the article mentioned is set up to do just that, IMO.

@ DrSteevo

The good Doctor said in ref. to Col. Boylan: 'Or maybe this will get really big and cost him the Star (of the rank of General Officer) he has been working for his whole life.'

As a former officer, I can assure you that Public Affairs Officer is not the best way to get that star. I think the Col. has probably hit the Peter Principle wall. If this goes bad for him, he'll be lucky to retire as an O-6.

Retired Military Patriot

Thank you for responding. I hope you didn't take offense to my assertation. You guys have a hard job to do & I wish I had met you when I was in the military, you sound like a cool dude.

As you well know, being a PA officer is not a line/command position & that (to me) is what hurts you guys the most.

Enjoy reading your posts here.

About Those 20th Cent. Composers...

I heard this guy, Gersh, uh something or other was pretty good. Didn't see any 'Gershs' in the article, though, so I must conclude he was a minor non-entity.

Sen. Clinton

will be about as much a feminist as any of the current contenders, IMO.

She'll certainly be waaaaaaaay better than the current occupant (and any of the trogdolytes trying to suceed him in the Repub party).

Parsin the Parson

Parson Jim posted: 'Unlike you, Holly, I don't view everything through a gender filter.'

You may not 'view' everything through a gender filter, but it sure seems like everything you post (especially on Broadsheet) is passed thru the 'those womyns are trying to emasculate me' filter.

Changing the Handle!

Immanuel Kunt (yes, with a 'u') asked: 'Um, do you think you could change your pseudonym? "Paul in KY" is triggering some old memories of my days as an altar boy that I would prefer to repress.'

Good one, IK, I was wondering when someone would touch on that! Once I had set that up as my moniker, I realized a few weeks later that a juvenile double-entendre could be made of the 'KY' (should have added 'not the jelly' to it).

I am a slippery one, I admit.

Also, I do think that the good Parson is a one trick pony whose posts generally amount to gnashing one's teeth about how easy woman have it & how bad men have it (sort of a more civil version of Brightstar), IMO.

Good Point, Timbuktom

I myself have acted cruelly towards some innocent animals in my youth. I will answer for it when I die.

Funny & True

Mizbinkley opined: 'Geez, I'd hate it if some future society assumed our standard of dress by our figurines: they'd think we all dressed like Holiday Barbie in her ball gown, Superman with his undies on the outside or like those creepy little Hummel Dutch Boy figurines.'

LMAO at your comment! Wish I'd thought of it myself.

How about aliens watching some of our TV comedies to get their understanding of humanity. Boy, would they be in for a shock when they landed.

On Wendell Berry

Hey Bebop, let's get a Democrat in the White House & then Mr. Berry could visit. I wouldn't waste him on the current occupants ;-)

Some NCAA Thoughts

I'm not quite sure, but I think that because the member institutions keep to this amateur/student malarky, the monies they make from revenue producing athletics are not taxed in the same way they would be if it was catagorized as a profit making non-educational entity. Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong.

To the person who mentioned swimming & its athletic/time demands & compared them to football: Sometimes, the football players need some recuperation time from getting the shit knocked out of them last weekend. Swimming is a very time consuming & intense athletic activity, but the swimmers aren't getting 'jacked up' every weekend as I see happening to the football players. Also, there is alot of studying of the opponent that has to be done during the week. I don't think there is a parallel for that in swimming. Again, please correct me if I'm wrong.

On FDR

To the Anonymous asshole who asked: 'which wars did FDR fight in, personally.'

I'm sure someone else has already reamed the dipshit who asked this question, but I like to ream em too, so I'll give my 2 cents:

FDR served nobly in WW I as the Undersecretary of the Navy. During the course of his valuable service he visited the front lines in France (the trenches, not the bistros Mitt favored). Also in some dustup known as WW II, he was CINC & did pretty well I hear.

If rich people acted more like FDR, I wouldn't despise them so much.

So, Anonymous asshole, in closing I will bid you a hearty Fuck Off.
