Points to Ponder

Many excellent posts in this thread. After reading about the murderer in the last few days (and reading his 2 'plays'), I have a few observations:

The plays were pathetic, IMO. Just the writng alone was (to me) middle school level. I found it hard to think that a junior English major would turn in such drek. I wondered what kind of grade he received.

Still as of this morning, I have seen no communication from his parents. Usually by now, you'd have had a stattement put out by their lawyer expressing their deepest condolences, etc. Other than reference to an interview with a grandparent by a Korean paper, nothing. I think that is strange.

I have read a transcript of his screed sent to NBC & I think the 'you' he rails against is his peers. I also heard him speak & had no trouble understanding him (he did have a very deep voice).

I would like to know if he ever returned to Korea for military training. As a national, he was supposed to do some. Looks like he didn't, but I could be wrong.

Finally, I would like to know if anyone from the school (educational or medical) ever spoke with his parents & broached the subject of their son being a little 'off' (for lack of a better term). Did his parents think he was OK? To me, he was too fragile mentally to be released into a large university all on his own (some good ole hindsight there).

More Like Gen. Ripper

Previous poster compared Se. McCain to the Slim Pickens character in Dr. Strangelove. To me, I think Gen. Ripper, the nut who sets off the whole fiasco, is a better analogy.

As an old USAF guy, I have to say I commended the bomber pilot's resolve to complete his mission & felt that reflected well upon the overall professionalism of the SAC pilots.

Maybe...

Mr. Bonds still has the rugged body to excel at age 43 due to all the Flax Seed Oil he injested (one drop under the tongue, just the way everyone else takes Flax Seed Oil)?

Wes

Wes's question: 'Why didn't it work for Sosa and McGwire?'

Excellent question, Wes. My answer is that Mr. Bonds (flax seed oiled up or not) is obviously a much, much better talent than either Sosa or McGwire.

That concession, however, does not change my opinion that Mr. Bonds should be banned from baseball & all his records from say 1999 on be stricken from the record books. Same for McGwire & Sosa & Palmiero & Canseco & anyone else they can unequivocally prove took anabolic steroids.

Mr. Rose has the stats to be in the hall on 1st ballot, yet he broke the number 1 rule in baseball (even more of a spit-in-the-eye than Mr. Bonds, IMO) repeatedly and for that I (who used to idolize Pete in my youth) think he should never be in the HOF.

I kinda look at Mr. Bonds like I looked at Nixon back in 72. Nixon was going to wipe the floor with McGovern, but that wasn't good enough. He had to have it allllllll. Mr. Bonds was on his way (or already there) to being the best all-around ballplayer since Roberto Clemente, but that wasn't good enough either.

At the end of the day, it's really a sports version of a Greek tragedy (although I'll wager Mr. Bonds will end up in a better situation than Oedipus).

P.S. Coach Gillespie is already bringing in a couple nice recruits for the Cats!

Execution of the Law

The Heretik up above stated: 'The President has a simple job. As the Chief Executive, it's his job to execute the laws.'

Excellent post & so true. I think the current occupant has been trying to 'execute' all the laws he (or 'Edgar') doesn't agree with.

Great Documentary

but I couldn't stand to watch the whole thing. I felt, after about a hour, that I was going to bust up my TV set. God, I despise those slimy bastards!

WW II Providence

Denning exerpted a post lambasting the Dean: '"There are certain things that make me believe in God. Take WWII for example. How many times did Hitler make exactly the wrong decision? Delaying the start of Barbarossa to help the Italians pacify Greece. Delaying ME-262 production to make it a ground attack plane. Not depl0ying Panzers quickly to Normandy because he thought the real invasion was coming at Calais. Its almost as if divine providence was at work, as if God was saying no, Adolph, youre not going to take control. Today, the same sort of thing seems to be happening.'

This is off-topic, but a great PS professor of mine, Dr. Yanarella, once posited that the only way to look rationally at the mistakes made by Hitler in the above exerpted quote (and others not in the above quote) was to assume that Hitler wanted Germany to lose the war & made those decisions in his desire to destroy the German people. Dr. Yanarella said that Hitler despised the Germans who had treated him badly and laughed at him in his youth (both before WW I & after) and this was his revenge on them.

Another way to look at it would be divine providence (and that's what it may have been). I just wish we could get a little more of God's mercy before this whole country goes to Hell in a handbasket.
