Garry Owen

There is nothing wrong with having a military to defend your country.

There is something wrong with wars that are not in defense of your country.

There is something wrong with using religion, race and patriotism to sell war.

I don't blame the soldiers, I blame the war profiteers. The fact that these soldiers are in this predicament is indictative of both a lack of opportunity and education. The onus is on our culture and the public education system.

I believe that rather than subsidizing multibillion dollar weapons systems that the money should be used to take care of our soldiers especially the wounded ones.

You should be less worried about make believe enemies and more concerned with the fact that this nonsense has bankrupted the country and red china holds enough dollars to effectively control our economy as a result of both this war nonsense, walmart and globalization.

You don't even know who the enemy is.

Original article: Iraq: Why the media failed

The press didn't fail

They did exactly what they are paid to do, serve the interests of the shareholders and their sponsors. To imply that they failed is to imply that they are somehow less than fully complicit and it was all just a mistake, oversight, or incompetence.

They certainly weren't toothless when it came to savaging the anti-war voices, repeating obvious lies, stifling dissent and questioning the patriotism of war critics. They didn't collapse, they were a bulwark of prowar propaganda.

This article sounds like a tv defense attorney trying to minimize their client's guilt.

James Spader I presume?

I am shocked and outraged!

I am shocked and outraged that radio talk show hosts are shocking and outrageous.

Just what kind of people listen to this talk radio anyway?

Can Sharpton do something about this "Smell my Face" thing?

i call bs

This genetic manipulation is about ownership of the food supply versus a common cultural inheritance of natural and cultivated species already in common use. Lst time I checked we had enough variety and quality in food.

Shame on the writer.

We are gambling everything on the profits from the length of patent on a novel genetic modification. It isn't the same as staving off global warming in which we have already gambled and lost.

The fact that people are held liable for the spread of unwanted patented crops onto their own land should give pause to any reasonable person unless they stand to profit.

Original article: Primary fears

why should they worry?

I don't see the intelligence of the average voter increasing much over the next couple of years and nothing sells like sucking up to power. People's minds seldom change once they are made up.

Original article: "Idol" slayer?

what was wrong with the past?

I remember Ted Mack's Amateur Hour, Star Search and the Chuck Barris' Gong Show and I can only shake my head in amazement that the news programs, and major magazines and newspapers of the day didn't keep us as fully informed about these important entertainment programs as they do today.

We live in a marvelous age!

If the other networks would step up to the bar and produce equally worthwhile programing then perhaps we would never have to hear about Iraq, Bush, Iran, the deficit or the price of gasoline ever again on a news program or in the print media.

why stop there?

This is all well and good for the medical profession and the civil service, but what about the rest of us? I think that many men could benefit from the advantage of knowing what is going on with a woman whom they are not familiar with - something like those homeland security threat levels that used to be so popular.

Such as "risk high - do not approach!"

That could not only save a lot of trouble, but it could also save lives.

I have a dent in my forehead, but it wasn't from an oar, it was from a coffee cup.

bringing back the draft

After this only a desperate fool would sign up. I think that it is time for all the pro war people to stop making posts on the internet and start signing up for active duty, otherwise they shall have to reinstate the draft. I can think of two that post here who would love to have an opportunity to defend some mideast country from its enemies while wearing an american uniform.

Come on Bushies, sign up to serve in Iraq and Iran. They'll take just about anybody now.

If they put in the draft, it will be worked so that everyone will serve in some capacity - everyone will be government property for 2 years or maybe we will have to extend that tour of duty too. Nothing wrong with a little involuntary servitude, that's what freedom is all about.

It really hurts when you think like they do, don't it?

bees

Meanwhile bee colonies have been dying off. What does the pollen of a roundup ready crop do to bees? Does anyone know or care? Could making plants resistant to insect predators also be harming pollinators?

Somehow I doubt that the people making these decisions are smart enough or ethical enough to ask these questions. "You need look no farther than the FDA. Do you think that nutrasweet and high fructose corn syrup are good for you? How about all those pills you see advertised on tv many of which are for diseases that weren't around thirty years ago.
