Missed Opportunities
[Read the article: Emulating the enemy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]GG: The political values and precepts of civilization long embraced and advocated by America -- not only for itself but for the world -- were now obsolete and dismissed away as "quaint" relics of the past. George Bush was fighting to preserve our civilization, our very existence, and -- just as was true for our Islamic enemies -- we cannot tolerate any limitations on the means we employ, and, in any event, both the urgency and Rightness of the mission justifies any means used to fulfill it.
What an opportunity we missed after 9/11 to show the world the way it should be done. Other than the tens (hundreds?) of thousands of lives lost and ruined unnecessarily, that makes me more sad than anything else in this long, costly debacle.
What could a true leader with vision have done with this chance? Reaffirming our values, refusing to take the low road, believing in our resilience and trusting the patriotism of the citizens (and guests) of this country, truly modeling notions like "justice," and relying on reasoned responses, cool heads and negotiation instead of a ridiculous display of brute force-- ironically, showing what BushCo et al believes is "weakness" might have taken this country to another level of greatness. Instead, we're plumb out of money, and nothing to show for it.

Takedowns
[Read the article: Joe Lieberman's dishonesty: The Iraq tragedy in a nutshell]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]jmand: I've seen takedowns before, but this one on Leiberman is a full body slam combined with a figure four leg lock and a sleeper hold.
:-) It really is great that Glenn documents all of this, and connects the dots so assiduously, since so few in the MSM seem willing to do that work. Yes, there is much more open criticism of Bush, but not in detailed, fact-drenched essays like we get here, available for reference forevermore.
Speaking of takedowns, though, onegoodmove put an Olberman video up today on Rice, that's pretty incredible:

Fun With Wingnuts
[Read the article: Is "Howard Kurtz" a software program?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]From Tuesday's post on the moronic Cheney comments "scandal"
You called it, Glenn! I hope Kurtz' audience recognizes his drivel for the idiocy it is; the more attention called to the stupidity, the more likely they will. You don't suppose it was all just an exercise in distraction from GW's new record low approval ratings, do you? Nah.
BTW, congratulations on being the bottom scorer in another useless wingnutty exercise:

I guess I should compliment everyone here on their civility!

Blatant Bigotry
[Read the article: Terrible hatred and anger on the left]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]jojo: I worry what these folks will do if they lose in '08.
Nothing. They'll do nothing, but continue to spew hatred to a smaller and smaller group of bigots. To help ensure they lose, every single Republican candidate should be asked the question, "Do you agree with Ann Coulter when she says [randomly pick any one of her idiotic remarks]?" Force them to renounce her statements or endorse bigotry. Either way, they'll lose supporters.
Rest up, Glenn. You deserve it, and I can't wait for the new book!

Lish
[Read the article: Terrible hatred and anger on the left]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The reason I didn't identify the blogger who deleted my comment is because I didn't want to appear to be using this site to vent a grudge against another site.
I understand that, but it then makes it difficult to hold them accountable and makes you look as if you're just making stuff up, you know? I read a lot of lefty blogs (many feminist) and there has never been an time when slurs against Coulter's femininity were't met with the same arguments that showed up here (not deleted, you'll notice). I don't really see the point of deleting genuine criticism, btw. Isn't having a conversation like that part of the whole bloggy point?
My point is that such comments are not only widespread and rarely criticized, but to show you what happens when we do try to object to them.
Hang out on a better class of blogs!
And yes, "decent heterosexual Americans" do own Coulter
I see your philosophical point, but there are plenty of "decent heterosexual Americans" who both do confront heterosexist attitudes and can't stand Coulter. You should have some way of differentiating them, and giving them some credit, or you'll end up talking to yourself.
You let her get away with her sexual manipulation
But aren't those who criticize her form and not (just) content precisely the ones who haven't been fooled by her sexual manipulation? They may be phrasing it awkwardly, but I think the slurs partly mean, "We see through your act."

"Friend" Christine
[Read the article: Is "Howard Kurtz" a software program?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The so-called 'trolls' are, in all probability, fellow travelers
Proof?
that wing is increasing
Proof?
as shown by the pathetic and despicable commentaries on our VP's near miss with assassination
Oh. No proof. I can think of no worse scenario for escalating the war than having a VP of the US killed in some foreign nation. Lefties don't want the war escalated. Get it?
At least Ann Coulter is honest enough to put a face to her opinions;
She's willing to sell books to her slavering fans, if that's what you mean.
they supply their own brand of vitriol from behind the comfortable anonymity of the blogosphere.
You mean like you're doing, here?
Obama and Clinton's newfound appreciation of religion
Proof?
So cut the hypocrisy, friends.
You first!
