Why can't the airlines just issue an overhead bag tag at the time they issue the boarding pass that matches your seat number, facrissakes? You get an assigned overhead space, and if you don't use it (I rarely do), you hand that bag tag to the flight attendant as you board. Now they know that your overhead space is available for those who have overpacked. If someone tries to get slick and a dispute arises, all the flight attendants need do is check the tags.

That dirtbag from Row 57 whose Tumi is in Row 6 overhead? His bag gets pulled, an announcement made that he must retrieve his own bag which was in the incorrect storage space, and he has to slink up the aisle, collect it, and wheel it back to his own damn seat.

I watched this live last night with my mouth open in shock. Armey's dripping condescension toward Joan was absolutely shameful. But as disgusted as I was by his exhibit of bad manners and worse behavior, I couldn't help but feel a little bit sorry for him -- this is an old white guy whose time has clearly passed, and he knows it. He's a mastodon stuck in a tar pit and this was just his way of trying to thrash his way out of it.

Kudos to you, Joan, for maintaining your dignity in the face of such an embarrassing (for Armey, not you) display. And further kudos to Bob Herbert for calling out both Armey AND Matthews on it when Joan was too polite to demand an apology herself.

I was in LA recently and heard from several people that the state of California is in such dire straits that instead of tax refunds owed to them, the taxpayers of California are going to get IOU's.

So to the people of California, when you get your IOU, please keep in mind that maybe YOUR refund is covering Nadya Suleman's not-welfare.

Then I hope you start flooding your state representatives' offices with demands that CPS be called in immediately to have all 14 of the innocent victims of their mother's narcissism removed from her care and placed with adoptive families with the means and mental health to properly care for them.

Then they might have at least a small shot at a normal life instead of what surely awaits them, which is probably something more like what happened to Andrea Yates' kids.
