Freedom of the Press the George Bush Way

I'm betting a lot fewer people will approve now that the proverbial shit seems to be hitting the fan. Posted by Brian Ross at ABC News just an hour ago:

A senior federal law enforcement official tells us the government is tracking the phone numbers we call in an effort to root out confidential sources.

"It's time for you to get some new cell phones, quick," the source told us in an in-person conversation.

Well maybe, just maybe, this will be what it takes for the MSM to get pissed and finally start reporting the facts about this administration instead of this pretense of neutrality we've been seeing for years. . The major newspapers and the network news bureaus may have become whores over the last few years but I'm guessing they still take maintaining the confidentiality of their sources very seriously indeed and now they've been given some proof that this administration has found a better and much easier way to find out who their sources are. With any luck this will be a wake-up call to every newspaper and every radio and TV news bureau in America -- George Bush isn't just pissing on the Constitution, he's pissing on every one of you too!

More Questions for AC

So, AC, when you write a letter to a friend do you put it in an envelope or do you send your friend a postcard? And perhaps you could enlighten me as to how a database full of billions of records of every phone call made by Americans in the last 5 years is keeping me safe. At best this is the kind of data that might be helpful AFTER another attack to help identify co-conspirators. What's more likely is that George Bush's idea of keeping us safe is for him to be able to identify and prosecute people who are talking to journalists and reporters about his illegal activities. And why stop at journalists and reporters? I'll bet our country would be a lot safer if our government started keeping track of phone calls to or from elected officials too. You just never know what THEY might be planning that could aid or abet our enemies. George Bush has been quoted as saying that our Constitution is "nothing but a goddamned piece of paper" and it's pretty obvious that the First Amendment is at the top of his list of things he won't be upholding any time soon.

Another ABC News Post That No One Will See

ABC World News Tonight managed to devote 3+ minutes to a volcano erupting halfway around the world yesterday but not one word about THIS story. Not revealing confidential sources has always been something reporters and journalists were willing to go to jail for. How nice that now the government doesn't even have to bother asking them to reveal their sources. And since there's been no hue and cry about this story I guess the reporters must think it's pretty nice too. Confidential sources revealed with a click of the mouse and now they won't have to worry about doing any jail time. Of course government workers now have one less way to let the American people know about this administration's illegal activities and abuses of power but, obviously, that was exactly the point, wasn't it. Here's hoping they'll grab a piece of paper and a pen and write a good old-fashioned letter if they know something that needs to be told. There isn't a doubt in my mind that Big Brother is checking emails but I'm pretty sure he's not opening our snail mail (yet)!

Cluelessness Starts at the Top!

As was nicely documented by richinohio and wwolfe , Rasheed Wallace is completely devoid of sportsmanship. Instead of knocking the "loutish" Cavs fans for cheering when this thug twisted his ankle, why not focus on players like Rasheed Wallace who seem to think they can say or do whatever they want with complete impunity. It seems to me that players like Rasheed Wallace detract more from the sport than fans who pay a good deal of money to cheer or boo as the spirit moves them.

George Bush makes it clear every chance he gets that he sees nothing wrong with his followers disrespecting Americans who disagree with him. (Back in April 2003, a month after we attacked Iraq, Tom Brokaw asked Bush about the boycott of the Dixie Chicks. The President responded that the singers "can say what they want to say," but he added that his supporters then had an equal right to punish the singers for their comments. Bush finished up by saying that "Freedom is a two-way street".) With this kind of shining example from our fearless leader, you should be happy the Cavs fans didn't rise up and slay Rasheed The Twit.

Go Cavs!

The Cheese Stands Alone (and So Should Pelosi)

Nancy Pelosi's intentions may be good but what the hell is she thinking?!?!? How can ANY elected representative who has sworn to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution publicly state that impeachment will not be an option if a president has committed high crimes and misdemeanors? Bush already thinks he's above the law ... I don't even want to think about what ELSE he might start doing if the Democrats promise not to impeach him! Every Democrat ought to be taking the same stand that Conyers is. He's not promising impeachment -- he's not even threatening impeachment -- he's stating that he's going to do what he was elected to do and let the chips fall where they may. Given Bush's poll numbers I think a lot of Republicans would have a lot more respect for the Democrats in Congress if they all took their cue from Conyers instead of Pelosi!
