  • Looks Like Oregon has it Right

    Ah,

Another fine example of the Bush administration "championing" free trade, while actually protecting their cronies. It reminds me of the disconnect between the Soviet pronouncements of the wonderful state of their economy and the reality of what was really going on. I feel like I'm having a flashback to the 80's. What's next? The return of parachute pants and leg warmers?

    But I digress.

I really wanted to point out a fine example in Oregon that was reported on in Wired:

    www.wired.com/news/wireless/0,1382,69234,00.html?tw=rss.TOP

It is a fine example of how Wi-Fi can be done well and be profitable.

    I want my MTV(.com)!

  • Sorry, David but you're off the mark

    David,

there are penty of great tools out there that you can use. While BASIC is a great language, there are plenty of others that are just as easy to use - my favorite is Ruby (check out rubyonrails.com). With Windows you can also easily use VBScript with Windows scripting host. There is also Javascript which is very accessable and can be used with any web browser. You can also use VB.NET Express which, while yes it uses VB.NET which is more complex than BASIC, is still pretty easy to get started. Just because it is not the same as your experience, does not mean that it's not just as good of a learning tool.

By the way, I am a fan of your books.

    -Erick

  • Even Superheros Have Messy Love Lives

I am recently divorced and have been getting back into the dating scene after 8 years. It is has been interesting and difficult at times, but I've learned a lot about myself and how I relate to women. I consider myself quite a catch as well. I have a great career, I'm attractive, in great shape, confident, intelligent, and have a wide variety of interests.

After reading your letter to Cary, I had to say that you like a great person - perfect, but almost too perfect. What I mean is that you almost sound invulnerable.

I have to agree with Cary. As confident and as on top of things as I am, I do find that I need someone that I can be myself in front of, that will let me have some of my bad habits, and let me be Clark Kent, on the days when I don't feel like Superman. We all want to be loved for who we really are, not just for who we have to be to the world.

Should you lower your standards? HELL NO! Nothing pisses me off more than a great woman acting less than she really is. But you don't have to be Wonder Woman all the time. It's okay to be Diana Prince sometimes.

  • Nice!

What a great little video! I think that it shows quite succinctly why some celebrities get frustrated with the paparazzi. It was very nice to see the way that Joseph treated those photographers. He kept his cool and treated them with much more respect than they afforded him. What more can I say but "Bravo"!

  • Google is not just a search engine

[Read the article: Make Foreclosure Money Fast!]

It was interesting to read about how these unscrupulous businesses pop up and how you were able to find out so much about them so quickly. It reminded me of an article in this month's Wired that talked about the idea that companies need to be more transparent and open. But my favorite line was this:

Google is not a search engine. Google is a reputation-management system.

(The link is: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/15.04/wired40_ceo.html, and the quote is about halfway down).

I think that is why Google will remain such a force for some time - they aren't in the search business, they are in the information management business.

  • Don't fix, just sit.

[Read the article: How long will it take me to get over my divorce?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Last year I went through a very similar experience. I was going along in my life doing my best to be a good father and husband, when out of the blue my wife told me that she was unhappy. Being supportive I told her to let me know what I could do to help. A few days later she let me know that she wanted a divorce. I was devastated. I offered to go to counseling but she said that she had already made up her mind and that was the end of it. Seven and a half years and it was over in a moments time.

I remember that for the next few months everything was painful. Coming home to an empty apartment, spending time with my kids, waking up in the morning alone, all the little things that reminded me of my old life.

But I made a choice at that time not to try and "fix" anything. I just let the pain sit in my chest, this gaping, raw, heavy wound that I was sure all the world could see. I cried, I screamed, I rode my bike, I talked with my friends, I even got drunk a few times, but I never ever tried to fix the pain. I just payed attention to it.

Then one day on my way to work, I noticed that I felt pretty good, and I really hadn't done a thing. I had simply sat with the pain.

I think that Sting said it best in The Lazarus Heart:

He looked beneath his shirt today

There was a wound in his flesh so deep and wide

From the wound a lovely flower grew

    From somewhere deep inside

There are still times that I miss what I had before and I still have to deal with some of the issues from my divorce. But I can tell you that the healing of the heart cannot be scheduled, it cannot be forced, and it should not be feared. It is something that simply demands our attention, our grief, our suffering, and lastly our embrace.

Hey everyone, don't go to that site because it tries to toss some malware on your machine.

Andrew, what were you thinking? You're more tech savvy than that!
