  • We have experience now.

[Read the article: Getting through these dark times]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In the teaching profession, it is said that some have twenty years' experience and others have a year's experience twenty times.

We are now saddled with an administration that draws its operating model from the Nixon Era. This administration has been a disaster. Although we do learn from experience, the experience itself may be flawed. We now have a situation where compromise is doing what the boss says and loyalty is to a person rather than to a concept. The present occupant of the White House listens to intelligence reports if they "are what I want" and expects the Justice Department to be loyal to him and not to the Constitution.

This is not to say the Mrs. Clinton is not qualified to be President. I believe she is. I just think that experience is over-rated. No President has ever been elected that was experienced when he took the oath of office. The presidency itself is a learning experience. The tragedy of this administration is that rather than adapting to the vision, however flawed, that is this country, it has spent seven years trying to make the country fit its vision, which is unwise, unrealistic, and unConstitutional.

  • When it comes to Castro, all bets are off.

[Read the article: Can a Cuban Democrat win in South Florida?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I have always pitied the Cuban people. They have gone from one dictatorship to another, and they have the animosity of the United States to deal with as well. The embargo has been a failure because it has not hurt Castro. It has hurt only the Cuban people and helped the Republican Party. The Democratic Party, to its discredit, has been an accomplice to the Republicans in its support for the embargo. The embargo is the master of Florida politics. It even trumps the vaunted Republican support for "family values." In the Elian Gonzales affair, Elian's father was not family because he lived in Cuba and did not deserve the right to rear his own son. If Elian's father had lived elsewhere, there would have been no controversy at all.

The Cuban embargo is an example of both sides of the aisle allowing short term political gain trump principle.

  • I hope, I hope

[Read the article: A week of petty though typical attacks on Obama produced nothing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I hope that the American voter will ignore these people, but I doubt it.

  • IT'S NOT PLAGIARISM IF THE ORIGINATOR DOESN'T SAY IT IS.

[Read the article: The "plagiarism" problem]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The purpose of copyright, trademark, and patent laws is to protect the originator from having his ideas stolen. If the theft claim is not made, there can be no theft. The Clinton campaign has no standing in this issue.

  • 60 Minutes

    [Read the article: Various items]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There is little doubt, unless you are a dittohead, that the Bush administration has deeply politicized the justice department. Not only has the JD been used to hammer political opposition, it has been infiltrated by those who owe their loyalty to Bush and the neocon "theology." These infiltrators hold civil service positions and will influence the JD for a long time.

As to Obama's supposed lack of patriotism, one can only look at those making the charges against him and think upon Samuel Johnson's dictum that "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." This does not mean that all patriots are scoundrels. It does mean that patriotism is not something that exists in a person separate from his character.

My parents, devout Christians, conservative Republicans, never owned a flag or wore flag jewelry of any kind; but my father, 38 years old with three children under the age of 10, volunteered for military service on December 9, 1941. That is patriotism. That he was not taken does not diminish his impulse to serve.

  • CONSERVATIVE?

[Read the article: The cold truth about climate change]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I have always believed that a conservative will act on the side of prudence and caution. If we wet the scientific argument aside, we find that present day conservatives are far from that. Their "pedal to the metal" attitude is really astounding!

  • Oops

    Typo: "set" not "wet."

Whoever doc 5467 is, say it loudly and clearly!

  • A little off topic, but may I make a prediction?

[Read the article: House Democratic leadership: not just complicit but also self-destructive]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In late October of 2008, the government will release to the media that our intelligence community has gathered information that unspecified threats have been discovered.

Because these threats are so imminent and so serious, we will have to go to condition Red.

  • A melding of two trains of thought

[Read the article: The "Rezko" game]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

One aspect of these kinds of scandals is that if people say it it must be true. This egregious use of creating fact from opinion is practiced by all the news channels, but expecially by Fox. If you claim that the Clintons murdered Vince Foster enough times it becomes true to you.

The second aspect is related but comes from a different angle. This is the notion that something has to be true or our news organizations wouldn't be allowed to say or publish it.

News doesn't need to be true. The National Inquirer has been an example of this for many years. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the "news" channels have followed this pattern.

  • Duh!

[Read the article: Killing ourselves in Afghanistan]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The Administration's goal in Afghanistan: A stable state for our oil pipelines.

Pakistan's goal in Afghanistan: An unstable situation for them to exploit.

    Any questions?

  • This Is Really Great.

[Read the article: Who cares if Eliot Spitzer hires prostitutes?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Now we won't have to pay any attention to the latest suicide bombings and U.S. casualties in Iraq. The so-called news networks are breathing a sigh of relief.
