Huzzah!

Right on Patrick, as usual. Said everything I think, everytime I go through security.

Now how about that scary "clear" system, which is just a scam piled on our inept bureaucracy?

Original article: Bowling for Pennsylvania

It's a shame...

That he only bowled 7 frames. Because had he bowled 10 frames, he probably would have broken 50, which is way more respectable. The news reports the 37, but not the 7 frames...

Free Speech zones?

Gavin Newsom spent weeks telling people he wasn't going to restrict protesters to constitutionally-suspect "free speech zones." Then he secretly created one giant one in Justin Herman Plaza. Away from the action. Away from the news cameras. I am outraged.

It's work.

It's a fact of life: if you want friends, you have to do some work to maintain them. What is work? Make an effort to call, email, or visit. What do friends do for each other? Things like the above, plus things they don't necessarily want to do, like attending important events (ie weddings).

I work hard to main my friendships. I don't appreciate it when lazy people like the LW don't return the favor. If the effort is going to be totally one-sided, why should I waste my time?

Sorry hon, you don't get to have your cake and eat it too. Like the last letter said - you ARE a bad friend. Accept that, and I guess you'll be happier (but all those people who invested time in being friends with you won't be).

Training

I also read somewhere that there's something to do with the fact that boys are either taught or more intuitively know how to jump, and more importantly land, and such so that they're safer. When that same kind of training was taught to girls, they improved there too.

an explanation

As it was explained to me by someone of that culture, in India, it is a parent's duty to see their kids married. Much like getting your kids into college here, but the responsibility continues beyond. Also, much like not making sure your kid does well in school, not getting your kid married reflects poorly on you - it's like a huge dereliction of duty.

Thus, this make sense. It's not about you, it's about them.

outrage and recourse

I continue to be outraged at the way the TSA treats travelers, and once again put out a call for ideas. What can ordinary people do to lobby for changes to draconian TSA rules? And - what about The Clear? .

American's move is so annoying I don't know where to start. It's one thing to say, ok, you used to have 2 free bags, now you only get one. But to charge for the first bag, when you are limited to what you can carry on (and yes, the whole liquid-and-nail-clippers thing). Patrick, love your column, and I think you're right - they've gone too far.

Finally, to all those child defenders - get over yourselves. Perhaps you happen to have a well-behaved child. Good for you. But don't pretend to be an expert on all of them and expect to be credible. I just flew cross-country the other day with like, 5 kids within 10 rows. The majority were typical - an outburst here and there, but nothing egregious. One was adorable and angelic. The 2 year old across the aisle, however, threw multiple and completely unnecessary temper tantrums (we weren't landing, so she doesn't get the ear-pain excuse). She then threw another one while just getting off the plane for god's sake.

So here's the thing, maybe your kid is great, and your a little defensive. But c'mon, if you claim you haven't seen a totally wretched kid on a plane flight before (not yours, of course), you're inexcusably wrapped up in the wonder of your own ability to procreate, doped up on Valium yourself, or lying.

You don't know how good it is until you can't take it

OCPs are awesome for both pregnancy prevention AND birth control. I mean, seriously. There's nothing wrong with being able to regulate *all* aspects of your reproductive cycle. You can't tell me it's not awfully convenient to know what's going on with your body and how that's going to affect your life.

Trust me, I know. It gave me a blood clot and so now I can't take it anymore. And it drives me crazy not to know when to expect my monthly houseguest, or how demanding it's going to be.

PSA: yes, blood clots happen, even if you don't smoke, even if you've taken the pill for 5+ years with no previous problems.

Original article: The rap on Palin

c'mon people, acting!

Tina Fey didn't acknowledge Sarah Palin while leaving the stage because that was part of the skit - it's much more entertaining when two doppelgangers just walk by each other as if nothing weird is happening. It doesn't make sense to do a cordial handshake in the middle of a skit. Moreover, even if she did have a choice, Tina Fey probably preferred not to have a picture of the two of them standing next to each other floating around.

Finally, isn't that "goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow" line one that TINA FEY used to do when she did Weekend Update? There was some genius in that, which seems to have gone unacknowledged.

Yes, the rap was true genius. Though I can't believe how pregnant Amy Poehler is. I was afraid she was going to hit her stomach on the desk! Though her continued appears on SNL is also awfully inspiring - think that's a dig at Palin too, who hid her pregnancy with jackets and scarves for as long as she could? ;).

Original article: Obama's infomercial night

Republicans repealed the Fairness Doctrine

Hey American Eyes, might want to complain to your own party...the Republicans were the party in power, the one that controlled the Congress that pestered the FCC to withdraw the Fairness Doctrine in the 1980s.

So while Equal Time would be nice, especially for expensive political campaigns (I'd support it), ye shall reap what ye sow.

And surely you understand after having read the article that it is not a violation of your 1st Amendment right for Salon to delete your letter, right? ;) (that is, unless of course Salon has suddenly become government-funded)
