I appreciate the humor and everything, but...
[Read the article: Women who run with the cows]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...if women can legally participate in the Running of the Bulls, what's the problem? That the police don't like it? Boo hoo. You think they'd like a Running of the Cows?
In light of this, I guess I don't understand what they are trying to say, Please to be explaining.

I've never understood the point of this practice
[Read the article: Female genital mutilation a growing problem in Britain]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Unless I've been misinformed, the reason they do this is to make sex unpleasurable to women. The idea being, if she doesn't enjoy sex, your wife won't have to use her feminine charms to seduce strange men and wreck havoc on society.
My question is, who wants to have sex with a woman who isn't able to enjoy it?
Male circumcision is barbaric, but this really takes the cake. Sorry. I know it's a judgement call on another culture, but so be it. I'm making it.

Alles ist verloren
[Read the article: Tom the Dancing Bug]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Very funny stuff. Even funny comics rarely make me chuckle aloud, but this one had my cubicle neighbors looking at me curiously.

Regarding Michelle Obama
[Read the article: Hillary is from Mars, Obama is from Venus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I heard an interview with Barak Obama's wife, Michelle, on NPR this week and it made me feel a little better about the possible direction this country could be heading. She's a really sharp and strong lady, and unlike Hillary, she really believed what she was saying. Her answers came across as honest, and her "First Lady cause" was something that I found comendable. Instead of some feel good BS cause like childhood literacy or keeping kids off drugs, she said her focus would be finding ways to get a better work/life balance for Americans who are working harder then anyone else in the Western world for LESS of a payoff. She even said it was hard enough for her to work 50 hour weeks and raise kids, etc, and she's a "person of means." She also said she wasn't too keen on Barak's run for president because politcs is dirty, etc. When the interviewer asked her, "Well, why should we support somebody whose wife isn't sure she wants him to be there? All the other Dem wives were 'estatic' and 'extremely supportive' of their husbands' asperations." Her answer was, "because I'm being honest and realistic." Damn! How refreshing! It spoke volumes for Barak that his lady wasn't the typical Stepfordesque 'political wife.' Granted, neither was Hillary, but she is so false I can't even watch her speak.

Real machismo doesn't need to advertise its manliness
[Read the article: Hillary is from Mars, Obama is from Venus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Bush and the Republicans who seem to own the patent on manliness swagger about and talk tough like they have something to prove. Why do they seem to be trying so hard?
Obama has the kind of machismo you still see in men who possess such confidence that they know their manliness is self-evident. They are comfortable enough with where they are on this trivial issue that they are able to really be themselves. Real confidence doesn't strut.
Or since somebody already quoted the Mitchell translation of the Tao te ching, I offer this:
Those who know don't speak.
Those who speak don't know."
Those who are manly don't strut.
Those who strut aren't manly.

They feel the rage. It just isn't politically prudent to show it.
[Read the article: Hillary is from Mars, Obama is from Venus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm sure many Democratic politicians are as pissed off as the rest of us are, but they've got a lot more to lose by expressing the true depths of their discust for the current administration. They know better then anyone that the political winds in this country change direction quickly, and yesterdays hero could be tomorrow's pariah (and vice versa). Exposing yourself like that leaves you vulnerable, and gives more fodder to your political rivals (someone brought up Howard Dean earlier), or could make you branded as an ideologue who won't deal. They must weigh every decision they make very carefully.
Look at Bush. When he was at the top of the world, he said a bunch of things I'm sure a smarter person would wish they could take back. As a result, Bush-bashing has become sport to my ilk. And EASY at that.
Not saying it's good or bad. It's just the way it works in Washington.

LW sounds like a spoiled little kid.
[Read the article: My Southern grandmother is dying, and I don't want to go back]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You bear this animosity towards your family because of dresses and piano lessons? What an ingrate. You are a better person for having a little music shoved down your throat at a young age whether you appreciate it now or not. As for the dresses, sorry. I was always being shoved into uncomfortable little suits and having my hair spit styled by my mom for church, and I hated it. Guess I'll abandon her on her deathbed for it. And in the South too (Austin, TX)! Oh how we suffer for our families. Give me a break.
Does Austin count as the South? Don't see much of the stuff you described here that you wouldn't see in Northern cities as well. I see more integrated hang outs, groups, and neighborhoods here and in Houston than I did when I lived in Boston. I was pretty shocked at how openly racist people were there. Maybe they thought it would be OK to broach the subject with me because I'm a Southerner, and they thought I'd agree with them or something.

This article is trollbait
[Read the article: My Southern grandmother is dying, and I don't want to go back]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]And I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. Not only does it offer the rest of us a chance to feel smug and superior to someone else, but it ALSO gives us a chance to engage in the Northern liberal's favorite pastime: South bashing. (My favorites are the one's that begin, without a trace of irony, with, "I've never been to the South, but...")
Thanks again, Salon. I hope by now you're realizing that the trolls on here didn't go away when you changed your "letters" section. Keep the trollbait coming, and then scratch your heads when they take the bait.

Biology compels men to look.
[Read the article: My boyfriend is checking out chicks while I'm standing right there!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The LW might as well be complaining that her boyfriend has a cock and two balls. Women will never understand the male limbido. Sorry.
Now commence the abuse. You may not like what I just said, but it doesn't change anything.
