Good post, Carol.
[Read the article: I now pronounce you ... selfish and condescending?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I too still fail to see why an agnostic and fiercely independent bloke like myself needs the endorcement of a church and the government to say my relationship is official.
My lady and I have been together for almost 10 years now. We have made our pledge to each other and our families. We are honest in our commitment to each other, and it's clear to anyone who knows us that we are in it for the long haul.
Marriage ceremonies are for the religious types. I respect their faith and right to do what they see fit, why can't they respect mine?

"Shuck and Jive?" Really? "Shuck and Jive?"
[Read the article: "Shuck and jive"?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]C'mon. It's no accident that those words were used. This is obviously an attempt to play on people's racist assumptions of black people and their culture.
It would be akin to Obama saying Hillary needs to stop swerving all over the campaign trail trying to put on her make-up. OK, bad comparison, but you get the point.
This is ridiculous, but it's what I've come to expect from the Clinton camp. Of course, no one will sympathize with Obama, fake tears or not. After all, he's a man. He needs to toughen up.

lol@CT Voter
[Read the article: "Shuck and jive"?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"And I won't mention again that he used to do cocaine. Because his past cocaine use is not something the Clinton campaign wants to bring to the public's attention, and even mentioning that he used to snort cocaine is a classless campaign tactic. While some may perceive it, saying that a vote for Obama is a vote for cocaine is not something we plan on persuing. Obama. Cocaine. Cocaine. Obama."

Clinton is happy when the conversation turns to gender.
[Read the article: The Clinton-Obama contest gets rougher]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Because she knows that beyond her gender and her last name, her record does not stand under scrutiny. That is the reason her "tears" have become such an issue. It convinced a lot of women that she was being unfairly piled upon by a bunch of mean boys, and they went out to vote for her because they she appealed to their sense of 'sisterhood.' Don't forget that the question that set her off would never have been asked any of the male candidates. The whole thing was contrived to get the female sympathy vote. How else would you explain the disparity between the polls that were taken on Friday and the final vote? what happened between those two events?
Obama on the other hand, has not exploited his race to the same degree that Hillary has her gender. To do that would "scare away" a lot of potential white voters. his hands are tied on this issue, but he seems to come out of the whole thing pretty well. He says nothing and instead conveys a sense that he is above such trivial bullshit.
In this race vs. gender debate, Hillary clearly has the upper hand. It is in her best interest to keep it on people's lips for as long as possible.

Dr. Strangeasshole or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Enjoy Trolling
[Read the article: Help! I'm an Internet troll!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was once one of the true believers that this new wilderness, the internet, was going to elevate and democratize the level of discourse between regular schlubs who don't have journalism degrees, PhD's, or a means to be heard by people who aren't in their drinking circle.
Then I was ignored, passed over, and dismissed in favor of people who poked, provoked, insulted, and generally more brutish about getting their opinions broadcasted across the interwebs. In order to get my posts even noticed and considered, I started using the trolling approach. I rudely dismissed other's ideas. I simplified my views to the lowest common demoniator and attached a contentious title to them. I called into question the parentage of some other posters, and generally was a total ass. Then people started responding to my posts. Most of the time it was completely unproductive, but there were times when either I or the other poster I was butting heads with would ackoweledge that the other may have a few good points despiote the crude language that was being used. Then a real discussion developed with some mutual respect. I think that Salon can generally be an exception to this method most of the time, but by the time I started posting here, some bad habits had already become entrenched by my experiences on other boards.
So it wasn't a total waste. Trolling did me some good. Once the trolling stopped and a real discussion began, my perspective was even broadened a bit by what I learned from people I disagreed with. I try to be civilized on these boards, but sometimes I revert back to my old ways when I feel like I have a valid point that is being ignored.

What? A presidential hopeful who is honest about his/her experimentation with drugs as a youth?
[Read the article: Obama campaign: Clinton should renounce remarks]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Egads! Everyone attack! SWARM! SWARM! We want our president's to admit only to not inhaling and to youthful indiscretions. We don't want the truth to the questions we ask. We want a carefully researched and triangulated answer that is dodgy, geared towards amiguity, and complete bullshit.
Seriously. Am I the only person who finds his candor refreshing? He used drugs as a kid. Hey. I did too. I'm not a maniac, and clearly he isn't either. What's the point of attacking him for this. If anything, go after the candidates who dodge the question or answer it dishonestly. Do you honestly believe that Obama is the only candidate who has experimented with marijuana and cocaine? Give me a break! Get off your high horse.
