  • What's wrong with being an orc?

[Read the article: Stay classy, John Edwards ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

History is written by the winners. Orcs have been besmirched by elves, men, and hobbits for too long, and it's time for progressives like ourselves to stand up to this sort of ignorant, Second Age bigotry. C'mon Salon. Some of my best friends are orcs!

Not that I'd want my sister to marry one.

    1) It's a 'Lord of the Rings' monster.

    2) Perception is everything. It doesn't matter if she did or didn't now. Or why for that matter.

    3) I was going to write something about a fictional break dancing crew from the 80s, but I'll be honest instead and say I don't know.

  • Big turnout is good news for Edwards and Obama

[Read the article: New Hampshire turnout: "Absolutely huge"]

Given Obama's recent popularity and Edwards' populist message.

    Just my uninformed layman's assessment.

  • Lik eit or not, he's the best chance the Republicans have

[Read the article: Will fate grant John McCain a do-over?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Unlike (ahem) certain other candidates, McCain can be absolutely pinned on several contraversial issues, popular or not, and will plead his case to anyone who will listen. His stance on the Iraq War is very unpopular with liberals (myself included), and his position against torture (yes, even waterboarding) and immigration has not won him many friends on the other side of the fence. At the same time, he makes these stances without the same buffoonish swaggering as Bush. He will sit down and speak with his detractors in government and the media (I've seen him on the Daily Show on several occaisions).

On top of this, he has proven himself to be a guy who is not such a bullish ideologue that he won't work across the aisle to pass legislation that would otherwise piss-off his fellow Republicans (like his campaign finance work).

I disagree with McCain on quite a few key issues, but I respect the man for clearly stating his positions on these issues and meeting with people he disagrees with.

Whether you see eye to eye with him or not, this is his biggest asset. He's had to eat shit and toe the party line during this current administration, and that's hurt him, but I think his better qualities will start getting more and more attention. He poses the biggest threat to whomever the Democratic candidate is, and I'm convinced he would trounce Hillary if that's who we put up.

  • I can see it now....

Scenario 1: I'm lost in a strange city hours after the bars empty out. I'm trying to get back to my hotel to sleep it off. The only other person on the block is a woman waiting for a bus.

ME: Excuse me, miss. Could you please direct me to the Holiday Inn on....

    HER: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! *tazes me*

ME: *convulsing on the floor in agony*

Scenario 2: I'm standing in line at a grocery store. Standing in line in front of me is a young woman clutching the hand of a toddler. The toddler, unbeknowst to his mom, is making faces at me from behind her skirt. Being amused by this, I make a serious of monster/monkey faces back at him. The mother turns and catches me mid-monkeyface.

    ME: *embarrassed* er.....cute kid.

    HER: AHHHHHHHH! PEDOPHILE! *tazes me*

ME: *convulsing on the floor in agony*

  • Hillary would never make it as a black man

    I'm just sayin....

BTW, this article is ridiculous. What's the point?

  • Edwards has gotten a free ride only in that he has been completely ignored by the press

And Grieve and Koppelman did a fine job of exposing Hillary's BS complaint about Obama.

  • Bravo, Keith.

Once again, you had me laugh out loud and make my spouse roll her eyes at me.

    Keep it up!

  • Is the irony lost on ANYONE?

[Read the article: The witch ain't dead, and Chris Matthews is a ding-dong]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

These tears were a ploy to play on people's sexist assumptions that women are weak and need support when they break down. That was especially true when Bill Clinton came riding in on his white horse to defend a lady in disdress.

And that question she was asked: "How do you do it?"

Is there any doubt that that is a question that can only be asked from one woman to another? Really. If Obama or Edwards had gotten that same softball question and then they choked up, it would have been suicide. The fact that it helped Hillary says a lot about the way women are perceived in American society.

  • I can't be the only person saying this

[Read the article: Obama co-chairman: Clinton didn't cry for Katrina]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Whether or not the tears were real (I beleive they weren't), they played on people's sexist assumptions that women are weak and need support when they break down. That was illustrated beautifully when Bill Clinton came riding in on his white horse to defend a lady in disdress.

And what's up that bullshit question she was asked: "How do you do it?"

Is there any doubt that that is a question that can only be asked from one woman to another? Really. If Obama or Edwards had gotten that same softball question and then they choked up, it would have been suicide. Maybe I missed the memo, but it seems in vogue to hate Hillary or find something wrong with her. To the best of my knowledge she's basically Michelle Obama with a political history.

    Wrong.

Though the fact that Michelle Obama is a sharp professional lady conjures up images of Hillary, she's got an unambiguous and frank way about her that Hillary has never had. You know how she feels about things because she will tell you if you ask her. How refreshing!

That said, if Hillary hadn't blazed the trail, a woman like Michelle Obama would be crucified today. I'll give credit where credit is due.

  • All he'd been doing was angling for a position in the Clinton administration anyway

[Read the article: Is Richardson in or out?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't know. It just seemed to me like he accepted Hillary's supposed inevitability early on and had been positioning himself in hopes of securing a good position in her administration.
