Hope springs eternal

I like Bill white too, but I don't share y'all's optimism for his chances.

With demographic shifts, Texas may well go blue, but the state isn't there yet. Enough Mexican-Americans voted for W. both for governor and president to be noted, and if Texas goes blue because of this demographic, they will not share many of our socially liberal ideas.

Haven't laughed at much Poehler's done since Upright Citizens Brigade

I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure she had to stop being funny in order to become a cast member on SNL. That would actually explain a lot about the show.

Anybody else stop reading at "as a Leo..."

Sorry. Through the unironic use of astrology to explain your behavior, you've tagged yourself as a self-indulgent and gullible spacecase, and any useful advise given to you that doesn't validate what you already believe to be true would be a waste of breath.

Best of luck.

Tracy Morgan not funny?

If you didn't think his Brian Fellows skits or the "backstage" bits where he demands Lorne Michaels get him a soda weren't funny, I think your funny bone might be broken.

Christ. This bugs me on so many levels

1) By definition, wouldn't the conservatives be the ones who supported slavery and progressives the ones who fought to end it?

2) Can we stop with the Founding Father worship? Seriously. They were smart men with some great ideas, but they were human. Pulling out a quote from them does not automatically validate your bullshit opinion and end the arguement. They weren't always right, and I submit that (gasp) they even made some key errors when founding this nation. It was the best idea of it's time, but times have changed and the rest of the developed world is passing us by while we cling to an outdated philosophy like it's religion.

3) Glenn Beck. I can't help but think that he's fucking with us! Does he really believe this shit, or is he just good at exploiting the ignorance of his fans?

@Democritus and @Celia

Democritus - Treating them like people instead of reducing them to charactatures would be a good start. That goes for the "salt of the earth" BS too.

Celia - Point taken, and truth be told, I was blowing off a bit of steam. Doesn't mean I don't have a point, just that it probably got mired a bit by my temper. (BTW - I have nothing but love for SF. A city where the greens actually have a fighting chance is a pretty remarkable place. Anyway- One of my favorite places in the country).

@Unabannable Bastard

1) Yeah. A cookie sounds nice.

2) Fuck you, buddy.

@Celia

That's a tough question, and I can't speak for you. If a whole people are to be judged by the politicians we elect, then that leaves little hope for very few of us. I imagine it'd be easy to shake your heads and click your tongues at news reports about the South with all your liberal friends from the beautiful progressive city of San Francisco. You can all hang out at your favorite local watering hole and ask yourselves, "Why do they do the things they do?" "Why do they elect these nitwits?" All valid questions, but none that I feel qualified to answer. Others have tackled the subject. I suggest 'What's the Matter with Kansas?'

My point is this: While you guys are preaching to the choir and judging us by our politicians, there are many of us in the South on the front lines fighting for the "hearts and minds" of our conservative relatives and co-workers. Hell, every time we have to leave our little urban liberal oasis and return home for the holidays, we are expected to answer for every stupid thing a Democratic politician does or justify our attitudes about gays, etc. Having to put up with shit like this on a daily basis tends to teach you a few things about talking to people here so they'll listen. I'm sure y'all think there's no hope for Bubba, but from my own experiences during this last election, I can tell you there is.

Talk to them like they are human beings with valid concerns and actually listen to what they are telling you, and you will be surprised at what they give back. Approach them with an air of superiority and judgement and you will see that willful ignorance the MSM is so eager to show you. Then you can all sleep soundly knowing that your attitude towards the South is validated.

How do you think being maligned and mocked by "superior" people elsewhere effects their attitudes? You think you can shame them into seeing things your way?

Perhaps more importantly: How do you think it effects those of us who actually agree with you most of the time to know that people in more progressive areas would just assume cut us off? That our efforts really aren't worth much in the grand scheme of things?

Let the anti-Southern piling on begin!

You guys forget that for all your bashing of the South everytime an article like this is published, there are millions upon millions of us who do not fit your convenient little stereotype.

That's the real irony in all this. Attacking Southerners for their supposed bigotry and ignorance regarding Judaism with your own set of bigotry and ignorance about the South.

"But...but..but...I lived there once and everyone was stupid."

Fucking hypocrites. Obama got 45% of the vote in South Carolina. It may not have been enough for the state to go blue, but a 5% margin is not enough to justify your painting with such a broad brush. I can't believe I even have to say this shit in a "progressive" message board.

(note: This is for the assholes making their little Civil War quips and suggesting the country would be better off without the South, not for the people commenting on what these idiot politicians said).
