I first heard about the George Washington video SilasDoGood linked to right here on Video Dog. I have had it bookmarked ever since that time (A year ago? Several months at least). It has the little Salon icon next to the bookmark.
So when you ask Why did I not find out about it here? I can only answer by saying Because you weren't paying attention.
Having said that, I must lament, again, how Video Dog is just a pale shadow of its former self. The first part of the downfall I remember was the several weeks with no new entries besides a half a dozen Hometown Baghdad clips.
To the anonymous person who advised us not to go overboard, calling for Walsh's removal is not overboard as I see it. For the past couple of years there have been many people complaining about the decline in quality of the content of this website. Lots and lots of people have said they were going to let their subscriptions lapse. I have let mine lapse. Walsh is the person responsible for this decline. It happened on her watch at the very least, even if it isn't attributable directly to her decisions.
It is possible that there are rights issues behind the missing good content. One of my favorite parts of Video Dog was the clips from The Daily Show. If Comedy Central has told Salon to stop posting those clips, Salon owes us that explanation. If Comedy Central hasn't told Salon to stop posting them, well, bring them back!
Red State Update is pretty much a one-joke concept. It was mildly humorous the first time or two. But it has gone way stale. If I felt it was funny enough that I wanted to see every one, I would bookmark the website, and visit it myself.
Bring back the old Video Dog, or at least explain why it is gone.
Fringe Base. Think about that for a second. The person who is cheering this unjust and unjustifiable military action made disparaging comments about the Democrats' fringe base.
Yeah, well, the outer center, the negligible preponderance, and the inconsequential majority will be pretty pissed too.
This is merely a bit of political grandstanding. "Look, torture is wrong. I issued an Executive Order against torture!"
If there were a real desire to stop torturing suspects, word would pass down the ranks, people would lose their jobs, even go to jail. There would be no need for an executive order.
It's not like this bunch cares about following the law anyway.
When I first saw the topic, my reaction was "Dump him." Then, after reading the letter, I thought "Just tell him it bothers you, and if he really cares about you he will at least try to be more circumspect." But then I read Cary's response, and I like it a lot.
My guess is that the most likely result is that he starts being much more surreptitious with his ogling. He may start to make it a game the two of you play. But I expect it to embarrass him, at least to the extent that he will try to avoid being so obvious.
I doubt this will make him actually stop, although that is possible. But I do think this is great advice.
I don't care how much the WSJ deserves to be taken over based on its past support of takeovers. Rupert Murdoch has thoroughly demonstrated, through Fox News, that he has no interest whatsoever in objectivity or reality.
If you think the WSJ is bad now, wait until Murdoch Foxifies it.
Garry Owen states:
The word is an anachronistic grotesque that is used in everyday speech by fewer and fewer people each year.
That is not my experience. I have seen more and more high school students using the term every year. Including the young man who said, "It just means 'person' to me."
I wish it were true that it was being used by fewer and fewer people each year.
Are there people out there who hate Bonds simply because of his race? Of course.
Are there people out there who tell themselves that it is about steroids, when for them it is actually about race? Probably.
Is race the primary reason for people wanting Aaron to keep the record? I doubt it.
Yes, I am white. And yes, I don't want Bonds to break the record. Does Bonds' race have anything to do with that? I truly believe it does not. Hank Aaron is the same race as Bonds, and I remember being thrilled when Aaron broke Ruth's record. I certainly honor Aaron now.
Bonds is a known cheater. Someone wrote that Bonds was not a proven cheater. He admitted it. He also claimed that he didn't know what it was when he took it, but that is laughable.
Bonds will break the record because he used steroids. He will not break the record because he is black. I think Aaron's reaction tells you all you need to know about that.
The restaurant owner just got a bunch of free publicity. Don't you think that's the thing he cares about most?
The time has come to stop responding to RealName. If the best he can do is accuse those who disagree with him as only disagreeing because they have been smoking marijuana, is he really worth the time and effort to refute? It seems to me that reaction is his sole motive. So, the best way to punish him is to stop reacting.
From the Heinlein novel Stranger in a Strange Land. I can only assume you haven't read the book, since you misspelled the word.
As your penance, you are hereby assigned to read the book. It will not be a punishment.
