Hmm
[Read the article: Bjørn Lomborg feels a chill]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It is very refreshing to see a scientist who does not deny that global warming is happening, but who says that we need to think more about how we attempt to solve the problem. I think a dissenting voice can help the debate tremendously, as long as the dissenting voice is not saying the problem does not exist.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough of the science to make any decisions about the solutions. I find the Copenhagen Consensus Center's approach of trying to find the value in each dollar spent on each of these problems to be novel and interesting. I just have no way to assess the applicability of this approach.
The worst part about Lomborg is the way that disgusting liars like Jim Inhofe distort his views. But this is not Lomborg's fault. Inhofe et al are going to find bases for their lies no matter whether Lomborg writes a book or not.
I am glad Lomborg is out there.

All bachelor parties should be men-only
[Read the article: Should strip-club bachelor parties be men-only?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If I was invited to a bachelor party that was going to have women attending, I would seriously consider passing on it. Part of the point of a bachelor party is the all male aspect of it. This particular situation of a woman attneding a strip club bachelor party sounds like she will be sleeping with one of the attendees. The combination of alcohol, very horny men, and an unattached woman seems set up just for that purpose.
Now on to the other issue. I have never found one of Cary's answers to be further from reality. Other than the one thrown for me, every bachelor party I have been to has been a fun and enjoyable party. No one has been arrested, no one has been allowed to drive drunk, no one has been unfaithful. It is a symbolic situation, a bonding situation for men. I can't imagine why Cary would be so negative about them.
Of course, the fact that he doesn't think the woman should be excluded tells me that he doesn't understand what bachelor parties are about. Maybe that is why he is so dismissive and disrespectful of them.

This connection has been proven before
[Read the article: Roundup: That breakup isn't as bad as you think it is]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Has connection been proven, or has correlation been demonstrated? Do you understand the difference? If you don't understand the difference, you either need to learn the difference or stop talking about such issues.

I have given up
[Read the article: Teachers: Be subversive]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]After four years as an alternatively certified high school math teacher, I have given up on teaching.
My first three years were at a magnet school that was ranked in the top 100 public high schools in the nation. The administration was hostile to me as an alternatively certified teacher. If I could be successful with no education classes, then the principal's Edd wasn't as meaningful as she wanted it to be. I was also punished for being subversive.
Even though it was a magnet school, there were many students there, a majority my students, who had little or no motivation to learn math. Of course this was my fault. Of course their low standardized test score were due to my failure as a teacher.
I then moved to a small rural district where I had maybe 20 out of 115 students who were motivated to learn math. That includes the students who were motivated solely by grades, not by a desire to learn. I was repeatedly cussed at, had objects(rocks, pennies, etc.) thrown at me while I was writing on the board, and was threated to be punched in the face.
I took advantage of all the professional development opportunities I had time for. I gave the students all the help they asked for. I gave my life to my job as a teacher. But I can't do it any more. I can't continue to put this much of myself into my job for so little return.
At least while I was working in the corporate world I got a salary commensurate with my effort. All that work for virtually no money is more than I can do.

This is not what too many people are making it out to be
[Read the article: Craig to cop: "I'm a respectable person"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Would it be a crime to drive down a street known for prostitution with a fifty dollar bill prominently displayed in your hand? I don't know. But if that is a crime, then what Craig did is a crime. I have read the police report, and I have looked into the history of soliciting sex from strangers in toilet stalls, and what Craig did was the clearly a solicitation for sex.
Some posters have commented negatively about the interrogation methods used by the officer on the tape. I was married to a federal law enforcement officer, and she occasionally discussed interrogation techniques with me (she was apparently quite goood at it). What this officer did, citing embarrassment etc., was quite mild compared to what may be considered standard interrogation techniques.
Craig has no biological children or grandchildren. Those that are mentioned are all offspring of his wife from a previous marriage. So that is not a relevant argument.
In other words, all of the complaints about unfair treatment or extenuating circumstances do not agree with the facts of the situation. This guy deserves all he gets, and no coverage is too much as long as it is not prurient

Here we go again
[Read the article: The 18 best Jewish ballplayers of all time]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The best Jewish this, the best Jewish that, whatever.
It really is creepy how Salon periodically has an article about various "superlative" Jewish individuals. I don't recall any other religion getting the same treatment.
What about the 18 best Unitarian ballplayers of all time? Or the 18 best Muslim ballplayers of all time? Or the 18 best Zoroasterian ballplayers of all time?
Just curious.
