WTF!
[Read the article: Should I have a kid or not?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Um, I would appreciated it if Cary didn't use his advice column in the future as a shameless plug for himself and Salon. WTF, four paragraphs out of that reply was used for promotion! That is not right.
And Cary didn't really address the LW's central dilemma either. It's not about wanting or not wanting. It's about have and have-not. HELLO!
This reply was truly awful. I've read through Cary's self-indulgent rants about his past before, but never something as bad as this.
Other readers have remarked that Salon has been on the decline for a while. And truth be told, the only reason I keep coming back to this site is mainly because of Cary. But now the quality of his writing is getting to be pretty bad too.
So, are all the editors leaving Salon or are you asleep at your desks? And Salon, are you TRYING to drive away your premium subscribers?

Oh my god, Cary.
[Read the article: My girlfriend's family is suffocating our relationship]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Would you put your rosy goggles back down on your table and read this guy's letter again?
Cute? Nuh-uh. His girlfriend's family sounds about as healthy as the Simpsons -- no, not the funny Simpsons that everyone loves -- the Jessica, Ashlee and pervy Pa Simpson that everyone snickers about. Because that family, for all its protectiveness and "closeness," has produced the biggest spoiled brats in pop culture who have all the emotional maturity of 12-year-olds. Yeah cute, eh?
Your LW's girlfriend is a child! She's spoiled. She probably has never stood on her own two feet for herself. What kind of a 27-year-old cries and vomits just because her "Mommy" misunderstood her and picked a fight with her? I know 13-year-olds with more backbone than her. What kind of a family sees fit to call each other CONSTANTLY?
The LW should RUN, right now. In fact, I don't even know how he allowed this relationship to carry on fo two years before he realized how insane his girlfriend's family is. But anyway, I'm not going to blame the victim in this case. The LW's girlfriend will probably never grow up. She's only comfortable filling supportive roles. She's currently the "daughter," and when she marries, she will be the "wife."
She will never be a full person, and I think that the LW probably wants more than that.

And to all the multicultural cheerleaders...
[Read the article: My girlfriend's family is suffocating our relationship]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]P.S. I just wanted to say that I am Chinese-American, and even if this girl is Asian, or Indian or Italian or from whatever other culture that values closeness in extended families -- it's STILL NOT HEALTHY.
I have relatives in China, and trust me, they do not need to call each other to make sure they're tucked into bed.
I have cousins in China, who can stand up to their parents and not become an emotional mess.
I have friends who are Chinese, who have their own dreams and have their own ideas on where they want to live without having to consult with their parents on where they're going to retire.
Oh hell, why am I bringing up my relatives and friends? I'm Chinese, and I still think this girl's family is weird.
(Multiculturalism is total BS)
