I am so sorry for your loss, Portlander. Animals really do know what is beyond human understanding. The thousands of animals of all species who ran for higher ground before the terrible tsunami a few years ago is just one of the better-known examples.

Call it knowledge, instinct, heightened sense, or even a form of godliness -- animals KNOW.

You might like reading about Oscar the cat, a nursing home resident who doesn't normally hang out with patients, but in the last hour of their lives jumps up on their bed to cuddle and comfort them -- with so much accuracy that the staff calls in the families to say their goodbyes based on Oscar's visits.

This is one of many Oscar links:

  • too polite to comprehend

God, I can't even imagine a family life where a member is doing something even mildly annoying and isn't eviscerated for it by everyone else within an hour or so. What's that like?

  • Poll this:

[Read the article: Next stop, 30 percent approval ratings]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Never mind the easily duped in 2000, half the country again voted for this worm in 2004. That's four years after we all had all the proof needed that he was well beyond incompetent and a war criminal.

He's only hated now because, gee, it's dawning on the 50 percent crowd that their own wallets are getting thinner.

I am even angrier at my fellow Americans than I am at this despicable man I can barely bring myself to name.

I'd like a poll on how many of my fellow Americans approve of themselves.

    Solution:

Turn up some good rockin' music, real loud. The fast beat gets the blood pumping and motivates you to work faster, but best of all it drowns out the sounds of cranky cohabitors.

(For enhanced effect, perform the de-clutter process in separate rooms.)

  • what took so long?

[Read the article: The meaning of Starbucks]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm surprised only that it's taken this long for Starbucks to feel the effects of Suze Ormanification.

By that, I mean that for the last several years, financial advice programs and articles have continually and specifically used Starbucks purchases as the prime illustration of utter financial waste. As in: If you stop buying Starbucks once a day you will save $1200 in one year, which you can be contributing to a 401K, put in a CD, etc.

Apparently the wisdom of that has been easy to ignore. But now there's a recession on. With or without the watering down of the product, I say expect to see lots, lots more Starbucks closings.

(And what's up with the demonization of Dunkin' Donuts? Before Starbucks was a gleam in Seattle's eye, Dunkin' Donuts coffee was considered the very good stuff.)

  • Isn't it obvious?

[Read the article: McCain bristles at Vietnam question]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Of COURSE his Vietnam experience prepares him for the presidency. When an interrogator (a member of the press) asks him a question (interrogates him), he will refuse to answer.

Isn't that all we've been requiring of a president for the last 8 years or so?

I have a relative who gets a lot of headaches and has found that drinking plenty of water really helps. Dehydration is known to cause headaches, and it's easier to be dehydrated than you think because you're not necessarily aware of it till you're terribly thirsty. Give it a try?

  • You'll get help

[Read the article: At 56 I want an art history degree]

Definitely go back to college -- and don't just assume that you'll have to take loans. There are still Pell Grants for people who are of limited income, campus employment, and all kinds of obscure scholarships for adults returning to school, especially now that you've hit the magic 55. (Hit the internet and all will be revealed.) Also, if you stay at your current job and want to ease in to school on a part-time basis, you may find your employer pays tuition.

Either way, you'll be amazed how supportive people are of older adults in school. The campus community just seems to want to pitch in with contacts, financial direction, employment, housing, all kinds of things.

Adults who go to college get a new lease on life. It's an adrenaline shot for the spirit. Best of luck to you.

LW, do not offer to wait for her. The girl is not ready to settle down, at least not with you.

For all we know, these two have TOO much in common, TOO best-friendy, and that certain heat that most women want just isn't there. Offering to "wait for her" is just so much more yawn-inducing, taking-for-granted, friendy-friend stuff. This girl is NOT looking for that kind of "romance" - I can just about guarantee it. She is looking for a challenge (or a series of them). And this LW has too much in common with her to be one.

In this age group, all kinds of relationships flourish for awhile, then die -- really good ones, mediocre ones, terrible ones. It's part of the big search.

This relationship is done and LW has to face it. You can't talk someone into being crazy about you or reason with them why they should be or wait for them to decide to be. He needs to look for someone else, and sooner than later would be better.

Yes, there will be someone else. This guy sounds like a catch, and he's going to have his choice once word gets out that he's available.

Look -- by definition, someone who stops showing you physical affection after 9 months is NOT Ms. Right. It's really that simple.

Wow! These women are sexual beings, with vaginas and everything! Just like half the rest of the planet! I'm impressed!
