Big Cars the Culprits

The argument that small cars are unsafe because they faire poorly in collisions with large cars makes no sense. It is the big vehicle that is unsafe. You don't blame a shooting victim for not wearing a bulletproof vest, you blame the guy withthe gun.

another thing to worry about

I don't have kids yet but dang - I feel like I could totally fotget my kid somewhere. I forget everything else after all.

Is there a difference?

Tehran is rioting because one Ayotollah-approved candidate has apparently lost to another Ayotollah-approved candidate. Shoot, it's like Bush vs. Gore all over again.

Quite a crew.

The GOP could do worse than Pawlenty - at least he's from a northern swing state and supports wind power cooperatives. I fail to see what Jindal brings to the table besides having not yet been the subject of a federal investigation (in Louisiana, that's saying something). However, given the radicalized shrunken Republican party in many states, it's more likely that any wack job who can survive Iowa and New Hampsire will cruise to the nomination with a strong Super Tuesday.

Universal Healthcare

I want equal rights for gay couples too, but right now, Obama has to do one thing: fix our healthcare system. That move would do more for gay couples and straight couples alike than anything else. After that, we can hold him accountable for all the broken promises.

Not enough work

The real problem is, technological innovation has created a problem - we don't need as many workers as we used to. Offshoring has created another problem - industry now has access to workers who will gladly accept less money than they would need to buy the products they make, sell or support. Before the dawn of unions, at least those poor saps were here. Now that they are oversees, full employment is unlikely.

Been there...

Sonia can't have Tony, Ruth Bader already has pretty much this exact relationship with him. But I hear Clarence needs a friend.

Already drowning

The difference between now and the Great Depression is not only that we have been deficit-spending at 1933 levels since the '80s, but also that the deficit is now financed by foreign investors. When the US sold bonds to Americans, we were essentially spending our nation's own savings to break the paradox of thrift that had our economy stuck in neutral. When we're spending China's money to deficit spend, we are weakening our country.

Planned Parenthood

Obviously these folks are a sham. I suspect Planned Parenthood is more successful at preventing abortions than these nuts. However, I do think the pro-choice feminist persepctive does women a disservice by focussing on abortion. Maybe it was feminist 30 years ago to help women abort unwanted pregnancies, because of the stigma associated with unwed birth. However, the next step should be to remove the stigma of bringing a child to term for adoption. Being pro-choice should really become being pro-choices.

Unlimited Power Now

Even if we all committed to going back to an 19th-century infrastructure of local farms, rail transit, etc., the developing countries would still wreck the environment getting up to that standard of living. Therefore, conservation is great from an economic standpoint, but from an environmental perspective, we need cheap, unlimed alternative energy.

ADA?

In Philly, people in wheelchairs just take the bus, all of which are equipped with wheelchair lifts. I think it's a crumby system because the time it takes for the driver to bring the wheelchair on the bus and strap it in makes the other 50 people on the bus late, but I assume it makes more sense than a gov't-subsidized taxi service. I mean, I'm all for disabled people getting rides, but it should come out of another budget.

credit where due

On one hand, Goldman didn't take the stupid risks other investment banks did. They only needed the bailout because the collapse of the other banks created a crisis of confidence in the whole industry.

On the other hand, our AIG bailout money went straight to Goldman, and Goldman gets to collect fees on the money we borrowed to fuunel to them. WTF?

worst job ever

Man I would hate to be the staffer or intern at Mediamatters whose job it is to comb through Hannity transcripts all day.

Here's $1. Now go buy $4.

The total cost to insure a couple with one or more children under my company's HMO plan is $16,200/year, of which the company pays up to $8400/yr. What the &*^% would an uninsured person do with $5,000?

Innovate

The so-called public plan will obviously be the most efficient way to manage our current system. However, that doesn't mean private industry can't compete. Kaiser Permanente offers lower costs and better health outcomes. Thus, people who have a Kaiser Permanente plan will probably keep it, and more will join.

Pay Dividends

The original idea behind stocks was to provide capital for a company to grow in exchange for a share in long term profits. Dividends. My retirement portfolio has stayed flat in this economy because I bought into funds of dividend-yielding stocks that pay into my account even while the value of the stocks has fallen.

someone has to be the stenographer

Bloggers tend to spend more time commentating on the news than producing the raw news on which to commentate.

Endanger Away

Taking kids away from bad parents can be more traumatic and harmful to a child's future than letting them be endangered by bad parents.

@andysays

I read (and enjoyed) the book too, and I remember being certain that it was based on an un-produced screenplay. I think that happens a lot, because it is easier to publish a novel than to get a movie made. Dances With Wolves is a prime example.

Meaningless

I keep saying it and I'm saying it again - it is only when stocks pay dividends that they have value.

happiness

Dennis Leary said it best. Happiness comes in small doses folks. It's a cigarette butt, or a chocolate chip cookie or a five second orgasm. You come, you smoke the butt you eat the cookie you go to sleep wake up and go back to fucking work the next morning, THAT'S IT! End of fucking list!
