focus people!
[Read the article: Lou Dobbs vs. La Raza]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In the final anaylysis isn't the issue whether to enforce our long existing immigration laws or to excuse certain non-compliance. The illegal immigration problem would be a non-starter if (1) we had requested needed non-Americans from elsewhere the legal way or (2) the employers were challenged and fined for hiring and using non-American labor as prescribed in the law when the problem became known. It appears to me that our elected congressmen and presidents have encouraged workers to come in illegally ever since Reagan became president. The populace has become wise to the game over the past few years thanks to people like Mr. Dobbs. The solution is to immediately resume enforcement of the law. Is this a revolutionary idea? We must also cut the illegal immigrants some slack since they came because we encouraged them to do so. A fast path is in order for these victims but only after enforcing the existing statutes. Our problem isn't the hard working illegal immigrant, it's a shortage of honest congressmen and presidents.

McCain's Energy Policy If Elected
[Read the article: No climate for old men]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]We can't stop global warming nor do we want to. We want to hold warming to the point it would exist if humans never inhabited the earth. The earth has always been warming or cooling. We want to greatly reduce man's CO2 contribution since it can cause some huge human problems.
John McCain is on the correct path if he pushes nuclear ("nucular" to some) energy as a major element in his energy plan. We have mistakenly done nothing expanding this clean energy source for 25-30 years. We were wrong. Let's right things.
Government subsidies can be very helpful in creating energy by other methods. For the sake of accuracy let's call them "farm subsidies" as in corn-to-ethanol. We can farm solar and wind power with minimal subsidies. Plant that 160 acres with solar panels or wind mills. The product of nuclear, solar and wind is essentially CO2-free. I think McCain, Clinton or Obama would be amenable to subsidies. If we can get those dead beat mystics we call Congressmen to go along with the plan.
Finally, recognize that trees and plants are CO2 consumers. Plant some.

Wal-Mart can be good for your health
[Read the article: Wal-Mart can be good for your health]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What a wonderful article. Yes we need Wal-Mart to provide ordinary medical services. Like regular blood work for example. You know--cholesterol, PSA (for we oldsters), triglycerides, etc. I'll pay for it. The blood labs used to do it for me as a walk-in if I could come up with the few bucks that it cost. The reports were beautiful and prompt. The labs won't do it anymore since it now requires a doctors prescription. The medical profession had clearly gotten to the labs if you know what I mean. I like giant Wal-Mart because they can fight the huge medical organizations. Oh yes, the government or insurance companies wouldn't be billed at all.

Obama's speech
[Read the article: Obama's speech on race]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The text of Obama's speech is just superior. I hope the superdelegates have the curiosity to read it. It may just assure an Obama nomination.

Single mothers are ruining society!
[Read the article: Single mothers are ruining society!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Your article says that "Yoffe seems to conclude that we should do a better job of shaming young women who have unprotected sex with men who will not make good fathers." If so, Yoffe is correct. Keep your legs crossed ladies. Children born to young women out of wedlock now seems to be the norm , not the exception. What a tradegy. Ladies you should be ashamed. So should the men. The children will suffer more than you. Don't be so selfish. You're putting the children at a real disadvantage. Shame was once a tool used by society to discourage unacceptable behavior detrimental to the individual and the group. Shame can be a very positive force.

Presidential material?
[Read the article: McCain's Vietnam obsession]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Here are some very reasonable questions itemized in the article that should be answered before we go into any war:
" Is there a vital national security interest at stake?
Is there a clear and attainable goal?
Have nonviolent efforts been exhausted?
Is there a viable exit strategy?
Do the American people support the action?
Is there broad international support? "
Can you even remotely suggest that Sen. McCain thoughtfully addressed these questions before we invaded Iraq? Heavens no.
Would he consider these questions if we were confronted with a decision to invade another "evil" country? Who knows. This gentleman's actions range from marginally reasonable to confused and counter productive. He is one unpredictable statesman. Thank god he's not running for president or we could be in real trouble....Oops! Really?

Tony Horwitz got it all wrong
[Read the article: Is everything we know about American history wrong?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Tony Horwitz says " "our nation's founding was "slow and messy: a primordial slime of false starts and mutations that evolved, over generations, into English colonies and the United States." " I suspect Horwitz views most things from a slimy vantage point. Although he may be technically correct on the facts he presents, his depiction of America is wrong. America is not responsible for some slimy actions of its' predecessors.
