Having been a "McPunk" (as the city called us because there was a McDonald's nearby) hangin' out pretty much through the 80s in Uptown Minneapolis I have this opinion on why we ran screaming from what "punk" is today.
Back then, those of us who dared to adopt the music and styles were already suspect (screw that, they called us poseurs) in the eyes of the older Downtown, Harmon Place type Punks. So, we took our integrity very seriously. I know, I know teens? But we did. Weekenders were weeded out pretty quick. Faux Hawk? Yeah, your ass is getting kicked. So you were always aware of being real.
Now? C'mon. Do I even have to explain the state of the "movement" now? Who in their right mind would want to be associated with this foolishness? I gave up way back in the 90s myself. I always want to go up to the little Goths (I hate the G word, we used the name "Darksider" in Mpls.) and tell them that if they really want something to be morbid about that I looked just like them 20 years ago. Heh.
Also, there is a time to grow up. I know, I know, I was going to be punk forever. But I was 15 years old when I said it. There were a couple older punks who tried to hang out w/us and they were sorta creepy.
So that's where we went. We still have the spirit but we're hiding out so we don't get confused with the "fashionistas" (I hate all ista words too) and the creeps.

If you're not glorying in the midst of it, from the outside it just looks stupid.
