@Ghingis Can

Ghingis Can said, "It was nice of this judge to give us on more anchor baby so her mom can stick around and keep getting her health care gratis the US taxpayers."

A non-resident does not get special rights to stay in the country because they gave birth on U.S. soil. A citizen child cannot petition the government for family visas until they reach the age of 21.

Thank low voter turnout and rising nationalism

If you look at the numbers, every country had low voter turnout. Couple that with rising nationalism and xenophobia, and it is easy to see why the right won a large number of seats. The mood in Euope is turning ugly. We do need facism or American style policies.

I did the stay at home thing for my two daughters.

Our situation, I am sure, was a bit better than most SAHDs. I worked parttime with a telecommute job. My wife is an artist and teacher, with a flexible work schedule. We also lived in Canada and France during those early years. Both countries have better social programs in place to support family life. In France, we lived in the same city (Nice) as her parents. That made time for date nights.

We eventually bounced to the States for a few years. Now, we are living in France again, for good. I still work from home must of the time.

Looking back, it was harder than I expected. Not only taking care of the kids but all the cruft that piles up in the home. Yet, it was a wonderful experience, one I would do again.

California cannot delcare bankruptcy

I hear this often -- California should declare bankruptcy. I think people have this view because cities and counties often file for protection.

A state has sovereignty and cannot file for bankruptacy protection in the federal court. The state's municipalities need the state's permission before they can file under Chapter 9, and the court has limited power over the municipality.

Democracy is what got us into trouble in the first place. The last thing we need is more citizen involvement. Our initiatve process has been a contributing factor to the state's demise.

The illgeal immigrant angle the the budget crisis has been debunked many times.

Cite the source. Let us see if it is credible.

@Diggadave

May I point out that other states provide those same services, and raise taxes to pay for them. If CA wishes to enjoy such services then raise the taxes to pay for them.

We would love to raise taxes. California has had a revenue problem for decades. Unlike those other states, we have a 2/3 supermajority rule for both the budget and new taxes. The state Republican Party will not allow new revenue. Any Repubs that cross the aisle are threathened with replacement during the next election. California also has a two term limit on elected officals.

@Ghingis Can

Various newpapers in the state have done articles debunking the immigration angle to the budget crisis.

California has a revenue problem, not a spending problem. Very little of the budget is discretionary. California has had the same rate of illegal immigration for the last 30 years, about 7% of the state population. The same rate as Texas, yet Texas does not have a budget crisis. We had the same illegal population rate before Prop 13. Illegals are used as the scapegoat.

Immigration has also torn up the fabric of our democracy. Finding good information to make informed voting decisions has all been but eliminated from the press.

Maybe you are not reading the same sources as I am. All special taxes and initiatives have information available to the voter. Candidates have websites. I am curious why you think the press is inadequate.

If you want to build a gas station you need to file an environmental impact report. If you want to import another 15 million people you don't need one.

Hyperbole. If you wanted to import 15 million people, you would need more than an EIR, the federal government would want to have a chat with you.

As your know, the brave Sierra club has a gag order.

What? You lost me here.

@ICgracchus

Your demographic paragraph made me think of this gem. California may lose a congressional seat in the next reapportionment, after the upcoming census. The state will certainly not gain a seat, which it has done for the last 150 years except 1920. Growth in California has been slower than the rest of the nation.

I had a sneaking feeling you were a xenophobic bigot. Your last post confirmed it.

Get some help.

I am not here to teach you political science.

There are plenty of good books on the subject, or you can take a college course.

@Ellis Diablo

I spent three hours last night trying to explain basic economic therory and statistics to a person. It was a waste of my time because he kept going back to his party's talking points. It is not something that cannot be done in a comments section of Salon.

I would expect somebody going to Columbia to know that. Also, name dropping may work for some of your readers, not me.

Stop being an ass.
