And she got engaged _why_?

Yeesh. Cary is right--LW really needs to sit down and figure out what the heck she wants out of life. (And, frankly, that sure doesn't sound like marriage.) Too many people get hitched without knowing who they are, and if you don't have any sense of that, how can you truly know your putative spouse--or whether marriage will work for you? LW is still working through her "duck-turned-swan" issues, and until she deals with those, she needs to at least tell her fiancee the truth.

Because character only matters if you are a Democrat...

>At the end of the day, Mayor 911 with his 3 marriages and tawdry life and his antagonism and personal attacks on Bratton and everyone else means little.<

The fact he is a hypocrite and an insecure facist bully isn't relevant to whether he could be a good president?!?! Sure, whatever...

Okay, a decent try at some suspense...

...but since most of us are rooting for the villains/Joe/Schlomo anyway, it's too little too late...:P

Original article: Don't be happy, worry

Oh, no--not the "depression equals creativity" canard...:P

>I was just thinking as I read this line how many musicians, composers, dancers, painters, writers, sculptors, actors, etc etc our world would have missed out on if all those people took pills to "even out".<

And I can think of just as many who would still be around if they hadn't had to use alcohol/drugs to medicate their depression--consequently getting addicted and destroying their health.

Exactly...

>But I have observed over all these years that extremely hot women are allowed to get away with really bad behaviour and are generally rewarded for it. And you guys only have yourselves to blame for that.<

But men like this never frickin' learn because they _have_ to have hot women. It is their right--it's what they deserve. Always. Settling for anything "less" 1) is a slam on their masculinity; 2) means they are failures who couldn't do "better." They would much rather blame "all" women who are, of course, bitches than deal with the fact they can't tolerate "imperfection" and essentially don't know what it is to truly love someone. Most likely, they don't want a woman to love--they just want someone to pick up after them and have their kids. In short, everything is all about them, and they can never admit that to themselves.

Original article: We're failing our kids

You've been had, Mr. Keillor. You've been took...

Like just about all of Bush's initiatives, NCLB was never intended to do anything more productive than discredit--and continue dismantling--the public school system in this country. (And make a bunch of "education entrepreneurs" rich.) After eight years of GOP doublespeak and their openly-stated opposition to "big government," did you really think they had _anyone's_ best interests at heart--or were trying to govern worth a damm?

Original article: We're failing our kids

Nonsense, statman41

>We know what works. And what works is old fashioned teacher-centered education. The biggest education study ever done - Project Follow Through told us that teacher-centered, direct instruction works best with disadvantaged kids.<

Okay. So why doesn't NCLB mandate smaller classes and more teacher-centered methods instead of this insane reliance on tests?

>As Keillor said, the poobahs get all huffy when challenged. And the reactions in this line of comments just affirms his point. We have NCLB because of porgressive education and only traditional education will fix it.<

Bullshit. The NEA and teachers' groups have been advocating smaller classrooms and teacher-centered methods for _years._ As well, there are a ton of studies proving the success of these ideas. So, why didn't conservatives implement these? Because they don't want public schools to work. As others here have noted, those folks designed NCLB to make schools fail so they would have an excuse to dismantle the system all together.

To He-Who-Should-Be-Red-Lobster-Fodder...

>The one you call Schlesinger is my Shoggoth.<

Aww, shit. That explains _everything_...g!

>Before long, if you continue to read it (and you will), you too will begin to feel the cold chill of the ocean air, though you may be in the middle of the desert, and it will draw you inexorably to me. To me, the deep one, down, down to the crushing depths, where I wait. Oh yes, I wait.<

I'm sorry, homes--you've been upstaged in sheer malevolence by the Bush crew. Instead of trying to warp hearts and minds with this thing, why not smiteth those guys for stealing your thunder? It would save the taxpayers and various prosecutors a hella-amount of blues, now. Come on. Do the wrong thing. :)
