>Isn't it obvious that it's going to stop next week anyway?<
Promises, promises...
>So why all the impatience?<
Because as others here continue to so aptly note, there's no frickin' excuse for wasting space and reader time on ill-thought-out unprofessional junk.
>How many other comic strips try so hard to respond to reader criticism?<
Oh, please--if the creators cared about readers, they would have put more care into this half-assed mess _before_ unleashing it on us.
>And isn't anybody curious to see how good this strip might become, if the trend continues?<
Why? Granted, KOF is (mercifully)less smug and incoherent than it was, but turning into a cliched, unfunny spy spoof isn't exactly an improvement.
>O.K., so we were pitched into the middle of a story, with no point of reference, so it didn't mean a lot to us and still doesn't. But all the stuff that was missing to start with is being revealed, four frames at a time.<
...and it's still not interesting, fresh, or appealing.
It's so nice that the "oh, accept the poor guy--he can't help himself" contingent here (including Cary, _inexcusably_) will never have to deal with the fallout of dealing with people who not only think like the LW's husband's friend--but who also act on it. Racism is not a static, harmless, or trivial value-flaw. It is hatred and ignorance--and a desperate need to prove one is superior. It's a toxic mix that makes people do extremely heinous things, and people who think it can be worked around or ignored enable this kind of mess. One simple question: if it's okay, why is it someone one should "tolerate?"
>Racists have something rotten at their core values. If they say or imply or hint at something racist and you don't call them on it full out, you're enabling their hatred, you're a hypocrite.<
_Exactly._
>And can you really be friends with someone you have to call out all the time?<
...or be on pins and needles he'll say something racist to your kids or your non-white friends...or will go off at some inopportune time? That's not a real friendship--that's a low-wattage hostage situation. Bottom line--if someone has hatred/deliberate ignorance as his core value, he's not a truly "nice" person, no matter how "down" he acts with you. It's how people act towards those not like them that is is the real key to how good they really are. And the day such people perceive you are not "like them" is the day you will see how bad-news they truly are.
>And Tennis: stop trying to save everyone with hugs. Some folks aren't going to get the hint until they're ostracized.<
Yup. Because they are stupid at heart, racists thrive on believing that everyone thinks they are right. If they get no consistent signs they are wrong, they'll never feel they have to change.
I feel sorry as hell for any child the author has--or adopts--because that child will never be seen as a living, breathing person with virtues and flaws. She or he will forever be an accessory to Gross' suburban-perfection/Kodak-moments dreams--and God help the child if she doesn't measure up. (Which she or he never will because that's a race you can never win.) It's obvious Gross just wants to be a mom not to raise a child, but to complete her fantasies, and that's a poor reason to have kids, to say the least. And I seriously doubt Gross will be as affected by not choosing the special-needs baby as she puts on. Given how me-centered this article was, it was just another way she could preen about how wonderful and wise and "generous" she is. Ugh.
>I am so tired of black apologists and white folks making excuses for evil and underdeveloped people.
It always drives me crazy when one white person excuses, defends, rationalizes another white folks racism at my expense when they are not on the end of the white racism.<
It's called the "But he's _really_ a good guy" syndrome. And, as I noted before, the whites who engage in this denial have the luxury of never having to deal with the consequences of tacitly approving racists and their attitudes. (And they almost never see just how vicious those "good guys" can be when their sense of superiority is challenged in even the mildest way.) As well, some whites refuse to believe that they could be fooled by someone who's racist. To admit the truth would make them look bad/foolish, so they'd rather defend such creeps (and put the blame on "oversensitive" non-whites) than admit they've made a mistake.
