Jaques Demolay, Thou Art Avenged!
[Read the article: One nation under law -- not Bush]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The Inquisition is over, and so is the interlude wherein the United States of America lost its collective mind and/or nerve by allowing the Bush administration to commit acts of barbarity paralelling those of the various French and Spanish inquisitions. Does the name "Torquemada" strike a chord?
This nation has had only one real reason for being: to elevate itself above the barbaric world surrounding it so as to serve as an example for that world. President Bush has desecrated this single holy goal and our Supreme Court has, indeed, plunged a metaphorical dagger into the heart of this medieval-style, idiot-irresponsible group of draft-dodging, war-mongering, greed-and-power-obsessed criminals (or soon-to-be-criminals) who we have permitted to remain at the helm of this Great Experiment, this Revolution against tyranny, immorality and arrogance, steering it into imperialism and frighteningly near outright fascism as well.
If we wish to continue to regard ourselves as Americans with a straight face and look the rest of the world in the eye then we are charged not only with supporting the good, within the bounds of the rule of law, but also to oppose, most noisily and, if necessary, by other means, and again within the rule of law (or at least be willing to gladly pay the consequences) oppose any evil which may emanate from the upper echelons of the government we elect to serve at our pleasure. America must never stoop to conquer.
The King is dead. Long may he stay that way.

Benath the Family of Man
[Read the article: The fallout from Qana]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It doesn't matter who "started it" (and we could, I bet you, come up with a list of at least a dozen disparate parties if we all tried). It just doesn't matter. Israel is the biblical and Talmudic heir to the "holy land." Jerusalem is the holiest of holy cities to all three Abrahimic reltigions and all their sects. Israel was supposedly founded as a homeland for a dispersed and persecuted, yet somehow always more-heroic-than-anyone-else people, and ever since its establishment, it has endured stones (and rockets, bullets and other crap) thrown at it. Because of the west's (and most especially the US's) obsession with taking care of "God's chosen people", at least up til the moment when Jesus returns to send a large portion of the planet's populace, Jewish, Christian and otherwise, straight to the Lake of Fire Theme Park. When that happens (and I understand it's gonna be soon, if Fallwell, Robertson, & Co. are anything to go by) all bets are off regarding the "holy" standing of the state of Israel. Meanwhile Hezbollah uses Iranian missiles (unguided - kind of like Tiajuana on Cinco de Mayo) which were of course originally made somewhere ELSE, while Israel responds, eye-for-an-eye (substitute whatever body part applies in a given death) over and over and over again, and we, the good Christian volk of the United States, continue to sit back, fund and supply these crimes by two equally idiotic groups,in committing their - now read this slowly - Crimes Against Humanity. No, NOT "war crimes." I'm not sure this can be called a war any more than Dubya's dumping of Iraq in the name of stopping "terror."
The terror is in the eye of the beholder, Bub, and the beholders, in this case, are, more often than not, innocent Arab children, women, old people, confused people, people who have nothing and WANT nothing to do with Hezbollah, they just would like to get the hell out of the way of this idiot's shoot-out.
Frankly, I don't give a rat's ass who "started" it, or who finishes it. "It" would not be happening right now if we, the citizens of this once-great nation of ours, didn't sit back and nod and mutter significantly about how eggs must be broken to make an omelet when we could be making history by pushing our President's back against the wall and demanding that he account for his part in making these Crimes Against Humanity possible. And enjoying them. (Yeah, I know, if we got our fingers out of it Israel would disappear over night. Oh well. That's how it got there).
We own the real "war criminal." The rest is all just sound and fury, truly signifying nothing.

Saint Mel
[Read the article: Mel on the cross]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Thank God Mel Gibson blew his ass out on PCH the other night! It led to the writing of this article which is brilliant, insightful, incisive and utterly right on in every respect. As a conservative Republican and trinitarian Christian I can say, from the inside, that the house I live in is rotten. This society, swayed as it is by neconservative right-wing hate-filled "Christians" who put "The Passon of the Christ" over the top with their prurient desire to watch a vivid and nauseating depiction of the story of the mortification of the man Jesus (pardon, that's Son O' God) is coming apart like no time in my memory (which is morbidly accurate over the period from 1948 through about 1994, before and after which everything is just a big blur).
Those who take offense at the article's depiction of hate-filled professing "Christians" need to tak a look in the mirror. Those who continue to defend our descent into a western version of Tehran spread across a continent need but to look around themselves at the idiots cruising along like lemings toward the edge of our re-flattened Earth.
It is a sad day when being a Christian (even if only of the Moorish Orthodox Church and so not taken seriously by many "proper" Christians), a Republican, a conservative and, yes, an American are all reasons to feel a trifle embarrassed. There's something terribly wrong with this picture and my only hope is that the one thing Gabler got wrong was his belief that Gibson was wrong in believing he's "fucked." I hope to God he is. It wouldn't be a moment too soon for Mel to get laid in a meaningful way, by the American public. The rest of the article is beyond doubt correct.
