Stephanie Zacharek usually sees right through phoniness (whether it is acting, directing, etc.) but I can't believe she, like most other critics, have fallen under the spell of Scarlett Johansson. She is truly one of the most overrated actresses to come along in years. I have seen her in a few movies now, including the racist and pointless Lost in Translation, and I don't get what all the fuss is about. The Academy is usually quick to follow the hype, but thankfully she continues to be left off of the nomination lists.
I was very surprised that Crash won Best Picture over the far superior Brokeback Mountain. I guess I am not alone, but I would send a message to the Academy that if they want to see an intelligent and thoughtful film about race relations in America they should rent Do the Right Thing. It makes Crash look like a student film.
