What's Good for the Gander is Good for the Goose

Would War Room be as up in arms if Alito had declared, like Judge Ginsburg did, her unbending belief in the right of a woman to have an abortion if she so chooses?

On July 22, 1993 The New York Times ran an article entitled: "GINSBURG AFFIRMS RIGHT OF A WOMAN TO HAVE ABORTION" which began:

"Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg today offered a strong and unambiguous defense of a woman's right to abortion, saying it was based on the Constitution's explicit guarantee of equal protection as well as an unstated right of privacy."

It continued:

"Judge Ginsburg, a 60-year-old member of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, is the first Supreme Court nominee to offer such an unflinching statement about the constitutional right to abortion."

And:

"she suggested that she believed that the Pennsylvania case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, had in some ways provided a stronger foundation for abortion rights than did Roe."

Is the issue really that Alito has already made up his mind about the issue -- which he surely has -- or the fact that he has made up his mind in a way that the left doesn't like?

If he had declared that a woman's right to choose was constitutionally protected, would War Room have complained that he wasn't approaching the issue with an open mind?

Original article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily

King, Wake Up Earlier

Would it be possible for you to wake up earlier (or stay up later) so that you're column could be the lead story and not that incessant Ayelet Waldman crap? You seem to have a later deadline than the other regulars.

I have kids and they're up at like five in the morning. Are Buster and his sister (sorry, the name escapes me) the only late sleeping children in the world?

Anyway, it is just a suggestion. More Kaufman leads. No more Mrs. Chabon leads. To whom do we write to start a campaign?

Original article: Weighty matters

Some Love for the Big Boys!

As a 6'3" man whose is very careful to keep my weight within a narrow band between 235 and 315, let me just say one thing: It’s about time the big brothers got some love.

The question for me is what is the reaction over Hastert's camp when they get the clipping? Shock? (He's not fat! He's husky!) Or do you think Hastert's chief of staff is yelling, "Somebody get on the phone to the people at Denny’s. There’s got to be an endorsement deal to be worked out here and see if they’ll throw in a daily complementary Grand Slam breakfasts for the whole office!"

I work out at a gym every morning around the same time as a large group of geriatric racquetballers & treadmill marathoners. What always impresses me about these guys is their complete comfort with their own bodies. I guess if you've had it for seventy-plus years, you might as well make peace with it.

Thanks Mr. Keillor for pointing out some positive readings of a spare tire.

Original article: Excuses, excuses

Clinton & Bush

Of course Conason is correct to point out the clumsy distortions of the Drudges and Limbaughs of the world, although it is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Nonetheless, my question is this: does anyone know when the secret prison system described by the WP and present in popular media forever was created? Were there "black sites" extant under Clinton or earlier?

Like proverbial police corruption in New Orleans, we not only condone US mistreatment of foreigners, we've come to expect it. It is only that this warrantless spying has been conducted against American citizens that has landed the President in hot water with most of the public.

Clinton was no saint and in an effort not to become the photographic negative of Limbaugh et al, it would be good not to simply assume in a knee jerk manner that all charges against him are malicious right wing demagoguery.

Thank you to Conason for pointing out that Clinton's exceutive order re: FISA was different than Bush's. Now, what about those prisons?
