  • Huge Disconnect between Soldiers and War Instigators.

[Read the article: American war culture in a nutshell]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The upper middle class, the wealthy, and the Jews all served in large numbers during World War 2.

But none of these groups are on the front lines in any significant numbers nowadays even though they are the ones who started the war, still support it, and profit from it in many instances.

Instead of broadly shared sacrifice as was the case during World War 2, the last few years have witnessed an epidemic of tax cuts for the rich, corruption, and profiteering unprecedented in US history, while lower middle class soldiers bleed, die, and get ripped off in a thousand ways.

Not to mention the terrible disaster that has befallen the Iraq people because of these vicious warmongers.

This is going to end VERY BADLY for all concerned if continues much longer IMHO.

  • Lies about Iran growing ever more absurd.

[Read the article: Columbia to be punished for hosting the new Hitler enemy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The lies and distortions about Iran and its President started long ago.

if Ahmadinejad is "the New Hitler" why are 25,000 Iranian Jews allowed to live peace and relative prosperity ?

Constantly repeated reports that Ahmadinejad threatened to "wipe Israel off the map" are ANOTHER BIG LIE foisted on the public by the largely Zionist owned and controlled mainstream media. The Iranian President did say that he expected the Zionist regime to collapse sooner or later, but he never threatened to attack Israel except in retaliation for an Israeli or US/Israeli attack on Iran.

For some people the idea that Iran might actually hit back if they are bombed is enough to get them frothing at the mouth.

Unlike Israel Iran has not attacked its neighbors for centuries.

Now I am no fan of the Iran regime in any sense.

But the idea that they are a mortal threat to to the US (with thousands of nukes) or Israel (with hundreds of nukes) is so absurd and over the top that one trembles for the future of a nation where leading politicians can peddle these Goebbels/style lies with impunity.

  • Israel and the Neo-Cons want to destroy Iran as a unified nation.

  • Economic and financial realites of empire in the age of the crashing dollar.

[Read the article: David Brooks and the deceitful tactics of the Beltway pundit]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The idea that the US can long dominate the world by force when it is the

biggest debtor in the history of mankind and the proud owner of a collapsing currency puts Napoleon's or Hitler's megalomania to shame.

As the costs of empire continue to grow and foreigners tire of financing it on the cheap --downward pressure on the American standard of living via some combination of recession, further shredding of the social safety net, and inflation will intensify.

By then the gap between the beltway consensus and mass opinion will be wider than the Grand Canyon and perhaps as wide as the fissures that lead to the French Revolution .

    Senate Passes Lieberman-Kyl Amendment

    by Steven D

By a vote of 76-22. While modified in some of its language (the resolution no longer includes language that called for Bush to use military force against Iran if necessary), it still says that Iran's Revolutionary Guard should be designated a terrorist organization. The resolution relies almost entirely on recent testimony made by General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker (which of course we know was filled with inaccuracies) to support its conclusions. Among the 76 Senators who voted for this piece of crap were the following Democrats:

    Baucus (D-MT)

    Bayh (D-IN)

    Cardin (D-MD)

    Carper (D-DE)

    Casey (D-PA)

    Clinton (D-NY)

    Conrad (D-ND)

    Dorgan (D-ND)

    Durbin (D-IL)

    Feinstein (D-CA)

    Johnson (D-SD)

    Kohl (D-WI)

    Landrieu (D-LA)

    Lautenberg (D-NJ)

    Levin (D-MI)

    Menendez (D-NJ)

    Mikulski (D-MD)

    Murray (D-WA)

    Nelson (D-FL)

    Nelson (D-NE)

    Pryor (D-AR)

    Reed (D-RI)

    Reid (D-NV)

    Rockefeller (D-WV)

    Salazar (D-CO)

    Schumer (D-NY)

    Stabenow (D-MI)

    Whitehouse (D-RI)

Note in particular, Hillary Clinton, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Diane Feinstein and Chuck Schumer voted for the resolution which Bush will invariably use as justifying any attack he wants to make on Iran. Lieberman's not on the list above since I don't count him as a Democrat anymore. The only Republicans who voted against the resolution were Chuck Hagel and Richard Lugar. McCain and Obama abstained.

  • Is Democratic support for militarism a tactic or what many of them really believe?

[Read the article: Conceding John McCain's "toughness" on national security]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It is a mistake to characterize the support of DNC type Democrats for a militaristic foreign policy as just a not so clever ploy to help them get elected.

To the contrary many of them believe in the mission to make the Mideast safe for Israel and US oil companies almost as much as Bush does. Their main problem with Bush is that he the blew it.

There is a Grand Canyon size gap between the mind set of party insiders and the Democratic voting base on issues of war and peace.
