I did move to Amsterdam...
[Read the article: The bicycle thief]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Don't tell the Dutch that bicycles aren't transportation. The majority of Amsterdammers voted (in a non-binding referendum) to ban automobiles in the center. A lot of people bicycle here out of moral objection to pollution, or because it's better for their health, but mostly they do it because it's traditional, and because it's cheaper than driving a car, and I mean EVERYONE does it. You haven't seen anything until you've seen the crowd leaving the Concertgebouw after a symphony (in suits and dresses and heels and everything!) on their bicycles.
You see? So next time you start to feel like driving is taking up too much of your budget, remember there is a whole country (albeit, one slightly smaller than twice New Jersey), that demands that the government make cycling possible (and SAFE!) for those who can't afford to drive. It's not just a cuckoo, granola-headed idea. It's old-fashioned fiscal conservatism (as opposed to this new fangled model where racking up debt for luxuries helps defeat terrorism, or whatever).

it's not necessarily a bad thing...
[Read the article: I sent a nasty text about my boss ... to my boss!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was independently contracted with a woman I couldn't stand, once. She was the kind of person whom people were instantly drawn to, and then, eventually found they couldn't get away from, no matter how badly she treated them. No one ever made as much money as they expected to. She figured that if they agreed to the contract, she probably could have offered them less, so she would take advantage of them in every possible way. Mostly she would change her mind about things in the middle of a project so that the contractor would end up spending more time and money then they had planned, but without being compensated.
If this is the kind of person you're dealing with, just dump her and get it over with. If you're just feeling like she stepped on your creative toes, and you mistakenly got your panties in a bunch about it, then take the advice of the others (only non-written bitching from now on, etc.), and look at it as a learning experience. Embarrassing as it is, I doubt it will be the end of your career. Anyway, if you think she's a pain in the ass to work with, probably other people do too. Maybe they will love you for inadvertently giving her a piece of your mind.

and really, who cares...
[Read the article: Bill Maher: "Don't show me your tits!" ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I like Bill Maher, but I do find his objectification of women a bit tiresome, and juvenile. He knows he's being juvenile. He gets away with it because he's a celebrity in a culture where this sort of cheekiness still has a bit of sex appeal, and it gets a laugh from other fratboys.
That said, I do share his distaste for new moms (parents in general) demanding that EVERYTHING be kid friendly, and that everyone share the joy of the miracle that they've created. As a single person with no desire to reproduce, I am also a little resentful at the insistence that every one else should be forced into the "aren't babies cute? isn't it a miracle?" trackor beam. I doubt he really cares if people breastfeed in public. I think he was just being opportunistic.

dental bacteria and heart disease
[Read the article: My boyfriend has no front teeth, and he won't go to the dentist]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]There is mounting evidence that certain bacterias found in the mouth cause heart disease. Another reason to take care of your teeth.
Yes, this is a good enough reason to break up with him, and I don't mean this flippantly. It's sad, but it's totally unacceptable to not take care of yourself in such a basic way. The missing teeth are one thing. If he doesn't mind, then you have to decide if you can live with it or not, but not brushing is seriously neglectful. What if he didn't shower or wash his clothes?

all kinds of red herring up in here...
[Read the article: Are working moms the enemy?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]On a bad day, I can be royally anti-children, and anti-mommy, but rationally I know that if SUVs, and flat screen televisions were freely available we'd all be cooperating like those spiders in the Tawakoni State Park in Texas...
Seriously, though, asking for fair treatment for single people in the workplace is a liberal thing, and making single take up the slack for working people is conservative? Asking single people to take up the slack for working people is blatantly socialistic. I'm not necessarily opposed to that, but let's call it what it is.

@BBWlover
[Read the article: Are working moms the enemy?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I need a nap after reading that post because it's tiresome. Taking cheap shots at single moms is as stale as welfare cheese.
We're talking about parents versus childless people in the workplace. Try to keep up.

[Read the article: Are working moms the enemy?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I just think we should at least have access to where ever you're getting your information. We're discussing an article about working moms versus childless moms.

izzit?
[Read the article: Who pays for an unwanted twin?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Twins are difficult to raise but living without children to love is more difficult...
Not to pick on Abby, but this sentiment is precisely why things like this happen. This tired notion that children=happiness, and the absence of children=suffering, and the desperation for modern medicine make right what nature or circumstance got wrong will lead us straight to Gattaca. Call me cynical, but in my observation it seems like many people would be grateful to arrive there.
It is amazing to me that in the 21st century having children is still considered the default option, even among rational people. I shouldn't have to explain why I don't want to have children. Explain to me why you DO.
