Habeas corpus is most important
[Read the article: Democrats bear responsibility for restoring habeas corpus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was very disappointed in the Democrats when they gave up and let the Republican "rebels" negotiate with the White House. The result was obvious, the "rebels" gave the White House everything it wanted and the Dems got nothing out of the whole thing, except to look weak. I wondered at the time what they were thinking.
Restoring the right of Habeas corpus is much more important than anything else right now. Everything depends on it. Without it, this is no longer the country we believed it to be. There are many bad laws and decisions that need to be reversed, but this is the ultimate. Restoration of habeas corpus, NOW, will send a message to the country and the world that the days of Bush are coming to an end and that we are working to restore our good name. It would also send a message to the country that the Democrats are serious about getting us out of the mess Bush and his followers have gotten us into.

Cohen's Column is Just So Wrong
[Read the article: Richard Cohen's brilliant (and unintentional) exposé of our media]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Cohen's column is full of incorrect statements, distractions, and just plain whining, it was hard to read. Obviously he has been in Washington far too long. By his reckoning nobody in Washington should ever be charged with any crime. Congress can investigate all it wants, but Cohen thinks that is where it should end. Just investigations, nothing more.
I was particularly irritated by his claim that anti-war advocates did not think about where the whole Valerie Plame thing could lead.
Glenn, I agree, this is the prime example of how the chattering class in Washington thinks, if "think" is the right word.
Perhaps that is the problem, they do not think, they just react.

Both had to act like a man
[Read the article: Elizabeth Edwards didn't call Hillary Clinton a man]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]When they began their careers, both Elizabeth Edwards and Hillary Clinton had to act like men. That was what was required at the time. I am only a couple years younger than these women, but when I was in law school and after I graduated, I was expected to act like a man, in fact, I still am. Although the legal profession has changed in the last 30+ years, there is still a lot of pressure on women to act like men. One also learns that behaviour and it is not that easy to unlearn it.
Elizabeth Edwards was not insulting Hillary Clinton, nor was she saying Senator Clinton acts like a man. Elizabeth Edwards way saying that Hillary Clinton has been expected to act like a man. That expectation was there for these two women, for me, and for many other women. Not that much has changed, even to this day.

The World at War
[Read the article: You must remember this]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have only watched the first section of The War, but it paled in comparison with the series from many years ago, The World at War. There are many similarities, but The World at War covered not just the United States.
I also object to calling this The War. By all rights that would be World War I, a war that Americans know very little about.

Hitlery
[Read the article: "Nazis" and "Hitler" -- the Right's casual, trivializing political insults]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That this would eventually happen was obvious to me when Rush and his followers continually have referred to Hillary Clinton as Hitlery (whatever the spelling) and no one calls them on it. I am not a big fan of Hillary, but I have always felt that this nickname was beyond the pale and should be objected to at every use. To me, that is part of Hillary's problem, too many people think of her as Hitler-ish just because of the name attached to her. It is not funny or cute, but the right gets away with it, vilifying with no adverse effects whatsoever.

McCain is/was Episcopalian
[Read the article: John McCain's religious pander]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If McCain is/was Episcopalian all these years, he probably was baptized as an infant. Since only one baptism is required, it makes no sense for him to go for a total immersion baptism now, unless his need to pander is greater than his religious beliefs.

Issa is a Republican
[Read the article: Red, white and mercenary in Iraq]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Issa is a Republican. He brought up the issue.

Moonlight just same old thing
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have seen at least a few reviews of Moonlight that say that it is not as good as Angel. It is not like Angel, it is like Forever Knight. It seems to me that they are just recycling Knight's old scripts. So far it is boring.
I, too, am unsure about Pushing Daisies.
I disagree on Chuck. It elicited several genuine laughs from me. Of course I am a fan of spy tv shows.

Not just in Minnesota
[Read the article: Reason to believe]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Here in Oklahoma my mother-in-law (life-long Okie) was offended when my husband refused to accept Miracle Whip on his Jello.

Is CNN not available in Iowa?
[Read the article: The Times on Iowa: Condescend much?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]There seems to be some impression that CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, the internet, etc., are not available in Iowa, especially the rural parts. Does no one give Iowans any credit for being able to find out what it going on in the world outside Iowa? Iowans read, watch TV, etc., just like people on the coasts.
It is very likely that most Iowans know that Richardson is Hispanic. He cannot hide it, but he does not have to advertise it. If he supports soybean subsidies, that may be more important to rural Iowans, where soybeans might mean nothing in another state, or even in Des Moines.
You campaign on the things that are important in that state. You cannot completely hide things that are important in other states.
Iowans are no more stupid or uneducated or racist than any other Americans. They do sometimes have different ideas and different interests than those media people on the coasts, though.

Republican wing of the Republican Party
[Read the article: John McCain lashes out at Mitt Romney]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What does that even mean? It is not like there are even any moderates left, if that would be the Democratic wing.
I think these guys are just saying anything that sounds good.

Lousy format
[Read the article: McCain, the Rockies and the "rant"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Your new format is lousy. The previous one was much better. Put it back.
