And...
[Read the article: Administration was warned invasion would help Iran, al-Qaida]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]what did the American people expect when they elected a man with the intellect of a jellybean. Of course al-Qaida wants us out the region. If they were occupying several Mid-western states wouldn't Americans justifiably want them to leave. Amazing, simply amazing that this person was ever elected to any public office. Molly Ivins tried to warn us!

Doesn't one have to be a journalist to have journalistic colleagues?

Chris Dodd to block FISA bill
[Read the article: Chris Dodd to block FISA bill]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Finally a congressman who understands that it's our Constitution that defines us as a nation. Perhaps the other members of Senator Dodd's party will now acquire a backbone and stand up to Bush and the rest of the right-wing demagogues in this country.

What didn't the president know (and when didn't he know it)?
[Read the article: What didn't the president know (and when didn't he know it)?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Molly Ivins and others tried unsuccessfully to warn America that Bush was fundamentally dishonest, lacking in character and intellectually challenged. I'm not sure whether I'm more disappointed in the lying scumbag himself or the Americans who elected him to the highest office in the land, not once, but twice.

The date of the demise
[Read the article: CNN's John Roberts helps out Mike McConnell]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Mainstream journalists, is that an oxymoron, ceased to be relevant long before Chimpy took office. The press had and still has the ability to shine the light of truth on the demagogues in Washington, but they gave that up for access (read ratings) years ago. I think when future generations look back they'll find that the destruction of our grand design began when our free press abrogated it's responsibilities. I'm not certain when that happened but it was well before February 12, 2008.

Congress votes to immunize lawbreaking telecoms, legalize warrantless eavesdropping
[Read the article: Congress votes to immunize lawbreaking telecoms, legalize warrantless eavesdropping]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Firstly, a thank you to GG for his heroic efforts on behalf of the rule of law. If even a fraction of the members of Congress had a fraction of Glen's commitment to the Constitution we would all be better served.
Secondly, words cannot express my sense of frustration and anger at our elected representatives for their utterly shameless betrayal of their oaths of office. As an aside I do some pride in knowing that my 2 Senators, Ms. Murray & Ms. Cantwell both voted against this abomination. As several others have said, I now find it impossible in good conscience to vote for Obama. I certainly won't vote for McCain and I will most definitely vote for other progressives, but Obama has shown himself to be unworthy to take the oath as President. If any of my convention delegates from Washington State are listening, I wouldn't object if you switched to Clinton;-)
Lastly, I encourage everyone to help the ACLU and the EFF in any way possible as they attempt to reverse this assault on liberty.

ACLU and EFF suits
[Read the article: Salon Radio: Rep. Rush Holt on anthrax]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Glenn,
Great job as always. A few questions.
1. What are the chances that either or both of the suits brought by the ACLU and EFF could be dismissed on the grounds that neither has standing?
2. My recollection is that Presidential pardons are limited to criminal, not civil cases, but does the President's authority extend to corporations or is it limited to individuals?
3. Is the FISC inferior to the Supreme Court? Are its decisions appealable and/or reviewable by the Supreme Court? If not, wouldn't the FISC itself be a violation of Article III, Section 1?

Bailout...
[Read the article: Bailout follows the 10 normal principles for how our government functions]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm not an economist (and barely got thru my only economics course in college, mostly due to boredom) and perhaps I'm being unbelievably naive, but wouldn't a system that allowed some government entity to purchase poorly or non-performing mortgages at a discount and then negotiated a lower mortgage with the homeowner with the caveat that some portion of the mortgage reduction was a lien against the home be far more effective and equitable for everyone involved without rewarding imprudent lenders and borrowsers at taxpayer expense?
For example, given a $400,000 mortgage, the government would purchase the mortgage from the lender for say $350,000 with the lender 'eating' the difference. In turn the government would refinance the load with the homeowner for $300,000. Hopefully 2 things would be accomplished... first the lender would acquire needed capital and remove a bad loan from their portfolio. Second, the home owner would have hopefully reduced their monthly payment to a level that was now affordable, thus preventing the home from eventually going into foreclosure and further exacerbating the current housing crisis. In return, the homeowner would have to repay the $50,000 that the government (taxpayers) fronted when the home is sold.
Certainly not perfect, but can one of you economists on Salon tell me why this wouldn't work.
Bob
