  • @ "Hypothetical" Recap

[Read the article: Perino on Mukasey: Confirm now, question later]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Bush, the CIA director Michael Hayden, and Mukasey used the hypothetical dodge when questioned about waterboarding.

Hayden: "Judge Mukasey cannot nor can I answer your question in the abstract," ... "I need to understand the totality of the circumstances in which this question is being posed before I can even answer that."

Bush: "I believe the questions he's been asked are unfair,"..."He's been asked to give opinions of a program -- or techniques of a program -- on which he has not been briefed."

    Glossary:

"Waterboarding" = Actual painful drowning of a subject (not simulated or painless) and retrieval before actual death. Basically slow painful death with a reprieve at the last moment.

"Extraordinary rendition" = Kidnapping, illegal extradition, torture by proxy.

    "Detainees" = Prisoners.

  • Dennis is presidential

[Read the article: Stop lying to yourself. You love Dennis Kucinich]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

He could be president of a democracy.

  • Good article

[Read the article: Bamboo shoots and trees]

A trait of good journalism is to answer questions the reader didn't even know they had. Interesting article. Thank you and good luck in all that you do Rebecca.

  • @ RP

[Read the article: Ron Paul's online haul]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"His radical property rights positions and federalism would be devastating to the environment."

And the status quo is not devastating to the environment? Traditional republicans and democrats have been in charge for the last 100 years. WTF have they done for the environment?

I donated to Ron Paul's campaign yesterday. I'll do it again. Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul are the only candidates within a mile of integrity and the truth. Stop throwing your support behind people whose actions are not aligned with your interests. Resist the natural tendency to maintain the status quo.

  • Luddite's unite!

[Read the article: Has Al Gore's fat lady finally sung?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm with those here that are skeptical of a market based solution to our environmental problems. I do not doubt that businesses can and will have a hand in the solutions, unfortunately some of the best solutions: free energy, sustainable living, un-development, letting forests expand, are not in line with industry. They want to "sell" us an energy solution. The sun is free.

  • Take offence

    [Read the article: "Radical groups"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

That a group whose simple mission is to end wars is considered "radical" by the government. Could you imagine the reaction to actual radical groups? We've already seen that reaction at Waco Texas. The state murders children in the case of real radical groups. That the reporter made the association between radical, and advocacy groups is questionable even if it was part of a set up.

Meanwhile...in Myanmar...a cruel and brutal dictatorship murders more of its citizens, some of them monks, and incarcerates the opposition. What do we hear from the United States on this? Nothing. I will assume the difference in our "need" to free the middle east from the tyranny of the Saddam Hussein, and our lack of need to act in Burma</>, has something to do with oil.

  • Excellent post

[Read the article: A defense fund for Gonzales? How quaint]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This article was well researched and right on the money. Nothing to add to the conversation but a kudos.

  • His true nature

[Read the article: John McCain, selective denouncer]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This isn't John McCain politically hedging. It is John McCain exposing part of his true nature. He has many admirable qualities. He has many many faults. He has given more than most in service to his country, and for that he deserves our thanks. However, let us not forget that when he was shot down in Vietnam, he was not only acting on behalf of our nation, he was a tool of the military/congressional/industrial complex and his job at the time was to drop bombs on both military targets and civilian targets. He is guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity, by his own admission. Being in his position, it is his moral responsibility to A. Dismantle the war complex that put him at odds with true American interests. B. Act to end the use of torture by our government and others. He has done neither. For whatever reason, he rarely stand up for what is right.

  • not better late than never.

[Read the article: Quote of the Day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I've seen many conservatives on CSPAN lately making negative statements concerning the current administration. These statements would have carried more weight 6 years ago. Coming now, during a lame duck presidency, they appear to be a Republican strategy of distancing themselves from the failing administration. Every effort should me made to force these people from their lifeboats and back onto the sinking ship. I will credit senator Hagel as a vocal critic of the war.

  • Romney's achillies heel.

[Read the article: Romney's man on waterboarding]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

He should be pressed and pressed on his views on torture, CIA secret prisons, Guantanamo, et al. I get a vibe. He was quoted as pushing to open up more Guantanamos, when Republicans were backing away from the idea. Political expediency would have put him in the backing away camp. One could say he is just strongly playing the "save us from the terrorists" card, but I get a feeling he is a closet sadist, or worse a "follower." A follower being someone who likes to hang with the likes of Cofer Black and gets a kick out of their proximity to people who do the "dirty work." As a follower he would never have the guts to speak up to a CIA officer, or even a local traffic cop because those types of men get his panties in a bunch. They say this is the way we do it, and he says "how high."
