Original article: Schwarzenegger's sly move

Kudos to everyone involved in this legislation

This is the type of leadership position on global warming that we are in dire need of. The guy signs on to do the right thing. Please back him up on this!

I don't care what party Arnold likes to think he is in, he is doing the right thing here. It ispossible that there are people that actually do get global warming and do understand that changes need to be made. This is a very forward thinking political position on the govenor's part and should be supported whole heartedly in the press and with the public.

No one is going to care about gay marriage, gun control, prisons, the right to choose, the middle east, or any of the myriad of political positions one can take...when we are 6 feet deep in flood waters and the average temperature is 150 degrees. Dealing with any issue other than global warming is tantamount to fiddling while Rome burns.

This protest is active

This is an active and valid protest. It stands in the way of something that slips under the radar of most. During the Vietnam war, many used the phrase "what if they had a war and no one showed up?" What they meant was if you could change the mindset of those they recruit for war, then there would be no fodder for the cannons. I agree that this is a very legitimate strategy. This is not a protest, this is a strategy to win the hearts and minds of those most susceptible to recruitment. Those people who play these games and think that they can separate themselves from the underlying message are kidding themselves.

I will meet you in this game. Where and when?

It is not just a game

If it was just a game, the Military would not be in the business of creating it.

From the game's site: "The America's Army Real Heroes program will allow you to enter a Virtual Recruiting Station (VRS) and have the opportunity to meet and interact with several Combat Veterans of the Global War on Terrorism."

I attended E3 and saw the first demonstrations of this game. It was originally created on the Doom engine and was used internally for training purposes. Now it has been repurposed as a recruiting tool.

Everyone is easily influenced, including myself. In this particular instance I would suggest the influence of the game is the back message. War is a job. War is fun. War is about team spirit. War is about soldiers shooting at other soldiers. War is about jobs, tasks and missions and achieving them.

In reality war is about 9 innocent civilians getting killed for every combatant. It is about indiscriminate bombing. It is napalm soaked children with their skin burned from their flesh. It is about rape and the burning of villages. It is about the theft property and land. You won't see any of these true depictions of real war in this game because that would not serve the recruitment purposes of the creators.

Can gamers understand the difference between game violence and reality? Sure. Are the gamers able to see the real back message that is being applied? In most cases, no.

Al Gore will need a vice president

All the better if Obama runs.

Original article: The GOP's tortured logic

How far is too far?

The guys at the top want to know how far they can go in degrading a human being making them suffer so that they will disclose information.

The answer is a simple one. As far as you would want an enemy to go on an American prisoner of war. Jessica Lynch as an example.

I'll vote for the asshole with the red tie!

Uh.....the one on the right. NO. The left.

The strategy is working.

If the Republican's have no fight on their hands, then they have some explaining to do. They need an opponent. Someone pushing back. It allows them to say to the American people it is us (the Republican party+America) vs. Them (Democrats). If there isn't an opponent, then the Republican's are hanging in the wind and they will begin to seek out opponents within their own party to curry favor with their consituents.

What if the Dems had been the first to oppose Bush on torture? Do you think McCain would have joined in? Hell no, he would have sat back and watched the fight from ringside.

Although this strategy isn't good for holding those in power accountable, it isn't bad for winning back the House and Senate. Once they are back in, then they can call the hearings and stand at the podium and be heard.

Hold their marshmallows to the fire Glenn

No more of all this anti-Dem ranting Glenn. Why can't we hear all the good stuff they have done this week, like where they courageously watched the television as Bill Clinton went on the attack. With all your criticism it starts to sound like you are ranting, having a melt down, or uncontrollably exploding in front of a national audience.

Waiting for Godot

The story of Theo and Mohammed defines, on an individual level, the large picture. If you were to take the war of cultures and distill them down to two characters as metaphor, for the sake of a stage play, you would write the characters of Theo and Mohammed. The scenes would unfold as they did in real life. At the end of play, when we are all sitting around sipping coffee and trying to determine the "meaning" of it all, some would come to this conclusion. The way the stage is set, Theo can live in tolerance of the other and Mohammed can not. The end of the play says it all. One of the characters has to die.

A tragedy.

Cruelty to an animal

Some "hunters" drive up and shoot quail from cars. Others cut the heads off of a doe and stuff it in a mailbox as a prank. These people engage in behavior that is meant to look machismo and hunter-like. They stand around at photo ops decked in hunter gear showing their affinity with the American heartland. Meanwhile they engage in behavior with animals that no true hunter would respect, and any non-hunter would be appalled at. Something should be said on behalf of the animals.
