[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Falwell gave a sermon on segregation, stating that "The true Negro does not want integration... He realizes his potential is far better among his own race... It will destroy our race eventually... In one northern city, a pastor friend of mine tells me that a couple of opposite race live next door to his church as man and wife... It boils down to whether we are going to take God's Word as final." He apologized for his comments in a 1988 interview. [Washington Post, 7/24/88]

“I listen to feminists and all these radical gals… These women just need a man in the house. That’s all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they’re mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They’re sexist. They hate men; that’s their problem."

In 2004 Falwell called the National Organization for Women (NOW) the "National Order of Witches,"

  • Nevertheless, many many people want a child to carry on their genetic heritage. This desire is only natural; in fact, it's the most natural desire there is.

[Read the article: I don't want more kids but my wonderful husband does]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

that's ridiculous since our understanding of genetics has only existed for a mere fraction of human history on earth. The most natural desires there are are: eating and sex. That's why mankind has procreated for so long, we love to have sex.

  • Falwell was quite clear on his opinion and reaction to interracial marriage and dating

even after the Supreme Court ruled interracial marriages were legal Falwell refused to perform them

he spoke at segregationalist rallies. In the fifties, Falwell used the Bible to claim the 1954 Supreme Court integration decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka was a satanic plot. In 1967 he started a racially segregated "Christian" school to avoid public school desegregation.

[Read the article: Is Oprah the new Imus?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Oprah complimented people working for her, saying they were good..

Imus insulted the team, calling them hos.

Oprah was showing how her Grandmothers hopes for her Grandchild had been expanded so that Oprah's options are far beyond what her own Grandmother would have hoped for her

Imus reduced those women's identity, ignoring their accomplishments and identifying them as hos.

  • what can you do?

[Read the article: The boss's incompetent son wants an employment reference!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Be a mentor.

1--explain to him the standard protocal re: asking if you'll be a reference.

2--offer to meet him for coffee once to talk through interview techniques, etc.

3--Don't say bad things about him when prospective employers call. Honestly state his abilities, and find a nice way to say it was his first job and he learned a lot. Can you say he improved a lot?

4--understand he IS in a awkward position where he can't put his Dad as his reference. Barring that, sounds like you were the closest thing to a supervisor he had in the small office.

Sounds like you helped him a lot then. You can help him a little more now while still being honest.

[Read the article: Should I invite my difficult friends to the in-laws' lake house?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I've noticed that very outgoing people are very critical of more inwardly oriented people.

LW"S assertion that there's something THE MATTER with groom is very egotistical. She's saying she's the perfect one and anyone with different degress of extroversion is wrong, bad, sick, to be avoided. Well, LW, you're wrong. The world is made up of all types of people, with about 75% being some degree of extroverted and 25% being primariy inwardly-oriented. It doesn't mean that 25% is sick, to be avoided and shunned like you're treating groom (he wants to come over, what should we do? eek!). It means we're different. Not better or worse, but different. And we do have some qualities you dominant extroverts don't: we can be quiet and notice things other people miss in the noise of extroversion. How about respectung all people and stop thinking they're sick just because they're different from you. And respect the different qualities they bring.

wow. When I'm at a lake house, the experience is about listening to the lapping water, looking at the moonlight glimmering on the lake, hearing the cicadas in the dark night.

Learn something from the quiet people and be quiet. Listen to the sounds of the beautiful environement and look at nature's beauty. Instead of considering him a pariah to be avoided, acknowlegde you can learn from him and enjoy that beautiful lake house. Stop yakking, be quiet, be still. Listen. Let nature speak for itself.

    LW,

It feels like you still want a free pass not to deal with this. You say in your follow-up letter that you'll have to ponder the serious issue of if you should pull your boss in, but then go on to say the boss already knows the son used you as a reference. So that whole excuse of not wanting to pull the Dad in is false. DAd knows and expects you to help.

Please step back and give a newbie a little advice and help. You see his domineering father and seem to understand the rought situation he's in. You don't have to lie, jeopardize you career on anything even slightly distasteful to help the kid out. Some nice comments and saying it was his first job and you saw him improve a lot over the time is fine. You don't have to lie or say anything bad.
