The scarf doesn't oppress me

OF COURSE IT DOES. Then WHY do you wear it? You say something about yourself when you 'choose' to wear that head covering and it IS about your rights as a woman. You didn't 'choose' to wear the head covering, your religion told you to. No woman ramdomly decides to cover up her hair so as not to incite helpless men into sexual frenzy. A woman only does that because her religion tells her to. And that is sick sick sick.

Men can contol themselves. Women are not obligated to cover their true nature so men can be free to do what they want. Women should not be the ones to alter their freedom for the comfort and ease of men. Where is self accountability in this religion? Men blame women for anything bad they do.

Plenty of women are brainwashed into choosing abusive situations, it doesn't mean they freely chose it, but that they had no choice, but rationalize it by saying the 'chose' it. The fact is, no FREE person choses subjegation.

SEarching for years for the answer in the bible and then choosing the most abusive religion out there isn't a sign of peity, it's a sign of someone who can't find the answers within and has to have an authority figure telling them what to do. I insult your religious choice, yes--and particularly the head covering. What is the point of the head covering, but to SUBJUGATE WOMEN. and I REJECT that wholeheartedly.

whereas the West perceives the scarf as a tool of control by men, they actually don't see it that way at all.

Well, I read an article written by a MUSLIM expalining why women wear the scarf and he said it is because women's hair exicits men and should be covered so they can focus. And THAT is crappola. We all should be accountable for our own actions and not blame other people for our acts. I say again, it is JUST like the ingorant folks who say a woman who wears a minishirt deserves to be raped.

I am not uninformed, I have read articles by Muslim women and I RELJECT their rationalization. Controlled women go to college, but it doesn't make them any more independant in their souls. What their husband, culture or religion 'lets' them do has nothing to do with the root teachings of the religions about women, the evilness, and men's rights over women. Phyllis Schafley was 'allowed' to have a career, but she actively fought against equality for women. I fight OPPRESSION whereever I see it and that includes: muslims, baptists, chatholics. I'm not anti-muslim, I'm ANTI FACISM.

If I have a choice I REFUSE to deal with a COVERED woman, to do so would buy into the validity of that cultural abuse. If the store clerk were CHAINED, wouldn't I be obligated to do whatever I can to FREE HER. And So I shall with COVERED women. I will do what I can to STOP the practice, just like we've fought so hard to stop female circumcism.

Muslim women who wear the scarves don't see it as an instrument of submission.

African women used to say that about female circumcism.

what if they were wearing swastikas or other signs of oppression

Don't Obama have the right to say "I reject your beliefs of oppression"

And Don't insult cancer survivors by saying a religion that prohibits women from working, going out in public, shaking men's hands, owning property, driving, being in a room with an unrelated man, voting, or letting anyone see your hair is anything like battling cancer.

discrimination

fighting against discrimination against a religious group is great, but what about when the religion itself discriminates, allowing fewer human rights to the women?

I support religious freedom, (you all have the right to delude yourselves and they're all equally wrong). However, when that religion steps on human rights, I stop and support basic human rights. I'll fight any religion that stifles human rights.

What if a woman wearing chains wrapped around her body wanted to be in an ad with Obama? Should we ask him to condone controlling women with chains, literal or figurative?

Funny how so many Hilary supporters claim to care about women's rights, but want Obama to support chaining women.

sorry sarah , you're wrongq

We as women must act the way we demand men act. If we don't want men to catcall us, we can't do it.

How can we ask men to treat us fairly if we son't do it.?

It's just not funny.

The age old rule applies here: IF YOU HAVE TO TELL PEOPLE IT'S FUNNY--IT'S NOT.

be an adult

I'd say if these Hillary supporters can't move on to support the fellow democratic candidate, then they aren't really mature adults who contribute to our society. They're just immature selfish narcicists who rather like complaining and being the center of attention, throwing temper tantrums like two year olds.

I AM a middle aged yellow dog and I never cared for Hillary's dirty politics that contradicts everything I've fought for my entire life: equality.

These people who don't believe in solving problems, but would rather complain are the sort of people who stand in the way of progress. It's all about THEM, not the people we're supposed to be helping.

And if you listened to NPR this morning, you heard the (supposed) Democrats who say they won't vote for Obama 'because he's a muslum." We don't want bigots like that in the Democratic party anyway, they sound more like Republicans, so they should go wiht the party of prejudice and leave us to MOVING FORWARD to a new world of equality.
