she felt "love at first sight" for the one and only time in her life. -- she and Bill decided that they could never be together, that despite this love they were not compatible.

Oh please. So they had the chance to be together but didn't, say they're incompatible, but still are soul mates? NO.

They're both drama addicts and manipulators who get off on deception. It's the thrill of being bad and cheating that rocks their socks. They're both sickos. To bad they don't think they're compatible (why? don't trust the other cuz they know the other is a habitual cheater?) cuz they're perfect for each other.

crazy is fun til it ain't

I'm reminded of how a lot men and women are attracted to "crazy," particularly crazy in bed. Then, they find out it's a package deal, it can't be shut off like a light switch and Miss Hot Crazy acts crazy all the time, and treats me like dirt. Why did the drama, the assertiveness, the princess act seem so attractive? Once the spouse is the victim of that crazy, all of a sudden it aint so hot any more.

My newly single next door neighbor asked me "why are all the ones who are crazy in bed crazy in life too?" I told him he'd just answered his own question. You get what you ask for.

Original article: Is atheism dead?

happends to everyone

your depression isn't about religion, it's about aging and the inevitibility of death. We all hit it square, and some get more depressed, but some use it as an inspiration to accomplish more in life.

Penn (of Penn and Teller) had a beautiful essay on NPR about why being atheist is so inspiring. I encourage people to goole it on the npr site. But he says knowing there's no afterlife makes him all the more driven to acheive things now, in his life. Rather than letting the no afterlife knowledge bring him down (is this all there is?), he lets it inspire him to accomplish more today because this is the only chance he'll have. Live life now before it's too late, cuz you're gonna die eventually and there's no afterlife.

"an abuse survivor who's familiar with BDSM"

The world of BDSM has a much higher percentage og abuse survivors than the general population, which is why I considerin it a sad symptom of abuse rather than a healthy choice. They're trying to relive the abuse they suffered as children, but this time turn it around by taking control like they couln't do when they were kids.

more wisdon from Penn Jillette

"Believing there's no God means I can't really be forgiven except by kindness and faulty memories. That's good; it makes me want to be more thoughtful. I have to try to treat people right the first time around."

The attraction of agnosticism is fence-walking. In the middle of the rail is no time to pick a side, it’s a time to feel the reality of gravity and balance, to sway and be amazed at the miraculous ability of lifted arms to prevent your fall.

beautiful L,; thank you!

I always thought the guy was a jerk

15 years ago he opened a store in suburban Richmond, VA WAY before the soccar moms cottoned to organics. The store failed BECAUSE it was too far from it's customer base, the urban hipsters in the city near the university. Instead of admitted he didn't do his due diligence and find out where his demographic customer base was, he scorned Richmond and said the city was too backwards for natural food. The truth is, there were a few very sucessful natural food stores IN THE CITY. Now, of course, even the suburban soccar moms have climbed on the wagon on healthy food, so natural stores do well in the suburbs too. But I've never fogotten what a jerk the CEO was to try to make the city look unsophisticated when the real problem was his failure to do minimal market research.

call !

you are not as superior to your old family as you think, so get off your high horse and call your dying grandmother for god's sake! There is no rationalization or equivocation: CALL.

Maybe some day you'll get old and wise enough to know you are not so superior and get over yourself.

But today, just focus on your dying grandmother. Suck it up and call, even if it's oh so beneath you.

and plus

it would have taken you less time to call your dying grandmother than it took you to write your complaint to Cary.

So this is what someone who escapes emotionally-abusive parents has to look forward to

You're projecting you own problems. there

LW never said they were emotionally abusive.

Just that they made her stop wiggling in church, wear opressive dresses, sit up straight for piano lessons.

Since when did those traits become a peculiar hallmark of Southern families?

thank you! I kept reading aobu these southern families that are opinionated, tell you what to do, transfer their own hopes on thier kids, expect their kids to have their same religious beliefs, and wondered:

what, y'all don't have FAMILES up north?

are you raised by wolves?

LW"S description sounds like every family with multiple generations rasied in different times, different cultures. This has nothign to do wiht the south. There are old fogies, know-it-all aunts, concerned relatives in every family

I have Southern inlaws and it's a regular 3 ring circus compared to my Northern family.

so that's YOUR family. It in NO way means that all Southern families are crazy and all northern families are sane. Please.

We only need look at literature, film, essays to know that families are crazy all over the world.

oH, except your's.

wacky northern families

The Beans of Egypt, Maine, any Woody Allen Movie, Avalon, etc. etc. etc.

Original article: Empty thine in-box

The inbox is not a file cabinet, it a to-do list.

to me, it's just like a pre-tech inbox. someone out there does remember physical wood, or plastic inboxes, right? lol

My goal was always to empty my inbox by dealing with each project as it came across my desk, and I have the same approach in the computer age, the information is simply stored and transmitted differently. But the goal is still to empty the inbox by dealing with the memos.

It it should be saved, then it should be saved somewhere else, filed in a rational, logical manner so I or someone else can find it. The inbox is not a file cabinet, it a to-do list.

I'm missing the part about emotional abuse

yea, me too. What was the emotional abuse.?

cuz being told to sit up straight and go to church is not abuse, it's child-rearing. Later when you're a grown up, you can slouch and sleep in.
