To echo what Steve said, Illinois has 102 counties and when Obama won his Senate seat, he did so with the support of something like 97 of them. That's a lot of "red" counties. It's not like he eked out a win, he had virtaully the whole state behind him.
"These trans-national elites... who really want to get beyond issues of sovereignty so they can organize and guide the planet on issues like global warming..."
I dunno about the Davos crowd, but trans-national elites going beyond issues of sovereignty so they can organize and guide the planet on issues like global warming sounds as much like the good folks at Exxon/Mobil as anybody.
What good is sovereignty anyway when you have Blackwater trickling down your neck?
This is just the sort of thing that could rally the far-right base. These guys would love nothing more than to shred the Constitution and start anew. Then we could have a truly faith-based government. Like Iran, but different...
So, if a democracy consists of a population that is 47 percent geniuses and 53 percent morons, guess who wins the election... One of the pitfalls of our current means of selecting a preznit is that, at best, the electorate will choose the most mediorce candidate. I wouldn't count the GOP out at all - they just have to figure out how to say, "Clinton," "9/11," and "the unborn," in the same sentence and their candidate gets 50 percent of the vote.
Four More Wars! Four More Wars!
If Obama wins the nomination, would he live to see election day? There are still a whole lot of racist white-trash hillbillies who would love to take him out. Look what America did to the Kennedys.
Many people have compared Obama to JFK. Let's hope there's one comparison we'll never have to make.
