  • Sexist blurb...???

[Read the article: Cheers for tears]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

While Ms. Berry clearly allows that men should feel free to cry, the blurb under the title only allows women that freedom...

    Why?

I am supposing that it is an editorial decision... Who? Why did they limit the article in that sexist manner?

I expect better of Salon. Perhaps I'm simply naive and idealistic, but I thought that that sort of yin/yang, men are strong and women are good-looking, sexist di-morphism was part of the conservative agenda. I don't like to have to counter it in my on-line haven of liberal life.

Do you see and understand what you've done?

    Please explain...

    Thanks

  • Abortion Amoral?

[Read the article: The abortion morality question]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I must say that I was a bit flummoxed by the realization that there are actually some people who believe/think/feel that the decision whether or not to have an abortion is NOT an ethical/moral decision, that it is as amoral as choosing to cut one's hair, choosing one's socks, or perhaps choosing which flavor of ice cream one wants on any particular day.

Now that I've stopped to think about it, I suppose that I can imagine that sort of position. But I can only imagine it by leaving out some pertinent aspects of pregnancy and by limiting my thoughts to a very narrow set of assumptions. I see that I must go and educate myself a bit more in some sort of modern feminist thinking if I am to be able to understand this position at all. Perhaps I'm leaving out some very important considerations.

It will be very interesting to see how this discussion shapes up... I hope it stays civil and compassionate. I hope that I will be able to learn from it...

I will end with one actual case and some questions for those who hold the position that the choice to abort is NOT a moral question.... Within the past few weeks I happened upon a news story in the Boston Globe that told of how in some third world country, India, I think, female fetuses were being aborted at a much higher rate that male fetuses... The reasons were very traditional (and to me appalling): Baby boys are valued more than baby girls. The women were choosing to abort female fetuses merely because of the sex of the fetus.

Do you still say that choosing and abortion is an amoral, i.e. "non-moral" matter?

If so, what IS a moral matter?

    Thank you for your consideration.

  • So Whose Idea Was It Anyway?

[Read the article: Wife or whore -- take your pick!]

    A Three Paragraph Story...

The Heart of the story is an academic study by Lena Edlund and Evelyn Korn...

Hmmm... "Lena" is a feminine name, but "Evelyn"...hmmmm... There are some men named "Evelyn". ...Nope...after a quick check, the Professor Dr. Korn looks to be a woman. They've both written some interesting papers... It would be a bit more work to see how their work has been received in the Academy... Awww...too much work. Let's see if we can get some man making stupid comments about the subject and make our point using him as the foil.

Well, Tracy Clark-Flory, you won't do the work necessary to engage the provocative work of two female academics––so you go all snide and sneer at a male journalist who did that work and published a piece in Forbes.

When I went and read the Noer piece after reading your three paragraphs, it was NOT what I'd been led to expect: I found out that he does not say what you say he does; And he does a much better job of questioning and probing the issues than do you. Now that I've read both his article and looked at the academics work, I return to your little piece and find it misleading, misanthropic, and mistaken.

What do you have to say for yourself? What were your motives? And why did you ignore all standards of accuracy, "fairness" and "balance"?

Thank you, though, for bringing his article (and more importantly the work of Edlund and Korn) to our attention. We'll just have to remember your biases in the future.

  • Transcripts available...

[Read the article: Camille and Cintra call the Oscars]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

You will, of course, transcribe it for those of us who are interested, but who read books rather than watch television, no?

    Much appreciated...

  • Forget "cute" and "pretty"...

[Read the article: The squeezing season]

How about some other aesthetic standards?

    Elegant... Gorgeous... Stately... Sharp...

    Comfortable... Neat... Smart... Retro...

    And then the anti-style Styles:

    Goth... Punk... Gamine... Hippie...

There are Goddesses of all sorts, not just those with the Barbie hourglass shape. Sorry, but I find "cute" and "pretty" fashion on any but the tiniest of preschool girls to be kind of "icky".

  • Get it Right...He's NOT joking...

[Read the article: Serious about preserving marriage? Why not outlaw divorce?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Rep. Lincoln Davis (Dem, TN) is one of the dozen or so co-sponsors of the bill according to a search on LexisNexis (confirmed at the Library of Congress website.)

He's been awarded "Defender of Marriage" Award from the Alliance for Marriage (the folk who drafted the amendment for our legislators' consideration and are a major driving force behind it...)

    He's NOT joking...

Or does SALON know something that we don't? Is it part of some very subtle Democratic plan?

No... Go to his website... He's one of the fiscally and socially conservative members of the Democratic Party.

    He can't be joking...
