The rotten state of denmark
[Read the article: Rotten judgment in the state of Denmark]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Hi Salon:
First time responding to this and I want to weigh in on behalf of Hirsi Ali. Free speech is indeed a two way street and the idea that one can spew hatred and death threats to their followers one day and the next condemn those who have the 'audacity' to lampoon something they feel religious about is absurd. I tend to agree with the writer who suggests that if Denmark (USA, Britain, France, etc.) offend you so much, try Iran or Yemen and have a nice day. Moving from the trite for a moment, the refrain heard from these folks sort of scarily reminds me what we are hearing from our own government in the USA. If you question our (read BUSH CHENEY) teachings or show disrespect to our soldiers, (politcians, business leaders, etc.) you are an enemy/traitor. It is as if the discourse of loyal opposition or rational behaviour has slipped from the position it once held, to be replaced by rant, either religious or political. We must expose them all for the charlatans they are. We must also remember some humility while doing just that.
Thanks for the forum and great news/opinion service

Afraid to Criticize Islam
[Read the article: "Everyone is afraid to criticize Islam"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Great discussion everone. Especially the letter regarding the Mormon who blew up at his college buddy over a perceived religious criticism. I am not suprised to find George W wimping out to the Muslim cacaphony. He is not a Republican, could care less for free speech and personal rights. Liberals, yes I am, need to take back the flag, free speech, the constitution, and be damned angry when a bunch of idiot 12th century religionists use violence to quiet the truth of their religious experience. Folks, we sailed away from this crap a couple hundred years ago. Fought a war of revolution and built in serious separation of church and state after we won. (Tho this current neocon born again group doesn't quite get that history lesson yet). I intend to criticize Islam, just like I criticize Christianity, my own Jewishness, Buddha, Creationists(?????) whatever the F they think, and people who believe in Astology. My concern right now is that the aforementioned 12th century idiots will kill others and not just themselves in their rant over a cartoon. Finally, imagine a world where our cars ran on something other than oil and these charming religious fundamentalists ended up with a very large sandbox to play in with some gooey stuff under it.

OUR SENATOR FROM WISCONSIN
[Read the article: Patriot Act games]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]February in the Tundra is usually grey and bleak with alot of snow and cold. Thanks to the non-existent global warming it was 45 and sunny yesterday. YIPPEE The point I would like to make is as follows: We live through harsh winters here in the midwest, winters that can last 5 months. I either toughens you up or kills your spirit. Thank god that in Feingold's case it is the former. That his seems to be the only voice in this wilderness of lying, greed, obfuscation, character assasination, and incompetence is truly the most frightening aspect of what we use to call democracy. I remember Republicans, my father was one, my mother still is. I remember Democrats, I was one and so were all my brothers and sister. Now instead, there is this boulabaise of power hungry, spineless egoists, who seem to have the morality of cockroaches preaching to us about patriotism and the American way. For shame, the only American way that I see down this particular road is a dead end, littered with the dreams of the middle class and the dead children whose only option was the armed forces. As we continue to hand over the treasury to the uber wealthy and the military industrial complex (Eisenhower), it would be wise to reflect on the fate of other authoritarian oligarcies. Marie ANtoinette springs to mind, along with the Mussolini, Hitler, Franco, the Russian czars, Idi Amin, Yassir Arafat......etc.etc. Thank you Russ for being a statesman and an American, and a fellow Wisconsinite, you do us proud sir.

CARTOONS
[Read the article: Them damn pictures]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]ITS THE DAILY SHOW:
AM I THE ONLY ONE OUT HERE THAT REFLECTS ON THIS AND SEES THE CARTOON INHERENT IN THE RESPONSES TO 'THE CARTOONS' AS SOCIAL SATIRE. COME ON PEOPLE, CAN'T STAND TO SEE YOUR PROPHET CARICATURED IN THE WEST??? HOW ABOUT NOT BEING CARICATURES IN THE MIDEAST. EVERY ONE OF US HAS THE SAME RIGHT TO THINK FOR OURSELVES. CHOOSE THIS RIGHT TO LIVE, AT THE VERY LEAST, WITH INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM. THAT IS THE ONE THING THAT ALL THE FUNDAMENTALISTS FEAR THE MOST. THEY CAN ONLY PREY ON THE UNTHINKING, AND UNQUESTIONING AMONGST US. I LEAVE YOU WITH MY FAVORITE QUOTE BY ee cummings:
"ONLY AS LONG AS WE CAN LAUGH AT OURSELVES ARE WE SURE WE ARE NOBODY ELSE." WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW A FUNDAMENTALIST OF ANY STRIPE OR PERSUASION LAUGH AT THEIR OWN FOIBLES???
