doloresflower and Lincoln
[Read the article: Another bad week for John McCain]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yes, it's true, Lincoln suspended Habeus and, in fact, claimed he was going beyond the Constitution in order to save it, and the country. And, in the process, dared the Congress and the courts to do anything to stop him. Every time I read about it, or see it covered on TV, I am troubled by it. He was a good man and a great President, but this was absolutely wrong. And, in the end, the Supreme Court told him it was wrong. I realize we have our American 'Saints' and that we look at Lincoln as one of them, but he violated the Constitution. We should be able to say it. You are absolutely correct.
What I do find interesting is that Lincoln knew it was unconstitutional but dared anyone one to stop him in wartime, while the current occupant and his Republican and Democratic enablers keep insisting what is going on now is all OK and Constitutional and we are all just stupid and concerned over trifles. And, of course, traitors who want the terrorists to win.
BTW, I have never felt that the Constitution was a Liberal issue, it is an American issue. Personally, at this point, the Libertarians who don't take the Liberal point of view on things I may be concerned about, such as health insurance coverage, appear to be the allies of the people such as Dodd, Feingold, et al, who are still looking seriously at preserving Constitutional rights. And, that's something you wouldn't have thought about even 5-10 years ago.

Adding to what others have said
[Read the article: Your prissy mainstream media at work]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Every President in recent memory has had some family member who is less than savory (or, in the case of the Reagan spouse/children at the time, they were just a pain in the butt and wouldn't get out of the news). In addition to the ones already mentioned by Ancient Assyrian, don't forget:
Bush 41 (before we knew what he was foisting on us in 43) had son Neil, who cost us billions in S&L bailout costs and, yet, he keeps getting jobs he's not qualified for.
Re: the pastor factor, well, since almost every single candidate and all Presidents either are religious or feel the need to fake it to get elected, we have the parade of either endorsements by religious figures or personal spiritual advisors in the White House or just comments on the general state of the Union from them - on both sides of the political spectrum, which I could, quite frankly, do without. But, it won't happen in my lifetime. So, I see no reason to say this is something to hang on a black Presidential candidate.
Regarding the state of comedy today, there was a turn toward profanity in comedy in the 1970s and it's been there ever since, for all races, for most comics under a certain age and you can see it regularly on HBO. A selection of it is mysogenistic but, I should also stress that you can listen to a good number of female comics out there and become certain that there was never a man who could do anything right since the world began.
