I always thought divorce was generally unpleasant for both parties
[Read the article: More on "the YouTube divorcée"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I mean, I realize, that there are cases where one side is clearly to blame (one spouse cheats, abuses, etc.), however, I know both men and women who have been through divorces and I have seen both sides suffer.
My best friend went through a divorce in NY, where, unless you can cite cause with specificity (adultery, cruelty or desertion) you have to wait a year before they will let you divorce. As they once said on Law & Order "I hate your guts isn't good enough." And, although I believed she was doing the right thing, it wasn't easy on either of them just to be tied to one another and they weren't going to be claiming anything of each other, no property rights, no alimony, there were no children. They just wanted to split and go their separate ways. But, he wasn't having a day at the beach, either, and the longer they had to be tied to each other, the more acrimonious it became on both sides, because they were both in pain.
My business partner (who is now married to an old friend of mine) has described the emotional impact of his first wife's infidelity and the eventual divorce. He was devastated. They had been high school sweethearts.
I know that Broadsheet is specifically a blog for women/women's issues. But, when exactly did the emotional consequences of the failure of a relationship that (most) people entering into it believe (OK, erroneously, if you look at the statistics) will last a lifetime become solely the province of women?

Games like this remind me of why I love the sport
[Read the article: Penguins survive trip to the brink]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I don't have a rooting interest in either team, and yet, I was completely captivated and stayed up for all the ovetime periods even though I had to get up at around 6:30am today.
The closest I come to caring who wins it is that both teams have a former NJ player on the team and Rafalski has been there more recently - so, I'm not really rooting for Detroit, but, I wouldn't mind seeing Rafalski hoist it again. However, it was also nice to see Sykora finally score one (not to mention that it was the OT winner).
MAF looked better than I have seen him in, well, ever...but, unless something very strange happens, like, Detroit completely messes up or MAF somehow plays like that again while Detroit messes up, Detroit is just better than the Pens. But, the game ebbed and flowed and MAF held them off in the OT periods until the Pens could score.
As for Don Cherry...I had Center Ice for the first time this year. The HINC first intermission ramblings were...odd. I was especially confused by the fact that apparently you are to blame even if you are a European player who was born and at least partially raised in Canada - since I believe Alex Steen was born and lived for several years in Winnipeg...but, he was just another evil European failing the Leafs where Cherry was concerned. But, the fashion show was fabulous!!!
Apparently the Leafs are in serious discussions with Ron Wilson for the coaching position and what I really wonder is how long will it be before Don starts blaming the fact that they have a non-Canadian coach for their problems? I know he generally sticks to blaming the French-Canadians and the Europeans for everything and leaves the Americans out of it but have the Leafs ever had an American coach?

The NHL regular season is too long
[Read the article: Red Wings hang on to win Stanley Cup]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The playoffs, however, don't really seem that long. At least not the actual series. I still don't understand why they had to wait, what was it, 4 days between the end of the Conference Finals and the beginning of the Cup Finals. Just start the figging thing, already.
I don't think you will get the 1st round back to best-of-five, debaser, very difficult to go back when playoff revenue means something to the teams.
It was nice that Lidstrom handed the Cup to Drake second. When you see guys who you've seen win it several times before (like many of the Wings) unless it's your team, you just sort of look at them hoist the Cup, again, and don't think much about it anymore. But, I was really, really happy for Drake.

Why it may have worked in Illinois
[Read the article: Return of the gas tax]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I believe when it was tried in Illinois it was the state gas tax they dropped for a period of time, the state gas tax is applied at the gas station, I believe, while the Federal Tax, which is what McCain still proposes doing away with for a time, is applied at the point of production. It's much less likely that gas stations, which basically price to compete with one another, are all going to lower the price and then raise them back the exact same amount, therefore, it's more likely that prices would stay lower when you lower/eliminate with the state gas tax and not the Federal tax for some period of time.
Even if the federal gove't passed a bill which forbade the oil companies from adding the tax back into their margins, the way oil prices have been rising (and the way gas prices have been rising even when oil prices don't rise) it would be difficult to prove which part of the increase in price was the "normal" current increase in price and which was them padding the margin with the Federal gas tax, although if someone did some price elasticity work they could probably take a good guess - however, it wouldn't be obvious until at least 6-8 months later when they had enough data to do the models correctly. Too late.
